The Importance of Eye Care in the Digital Age

Good evening great people of hive, welcome to my blog once again. In all our daily lifestyle, we fail to understand that certain things that we do have excessive negative effects on our lives and our health as a whole.

The world is in a digital era and everything we do revolves around technology, it is almost difficult to live a day without using the commonest things as our phones. As every single day passes, we expose our eyes to screen light using our phones, computer, televisions, our tablets etc. even children of today spend excessive time watching the screens of televisions, playing games, using the phones.

All these, have adverse effects on our lives, we get glued to our favourite TV shows, spend time on social media, we actually feel we have enough time and fun when viewing movies or going through the social media and obviously people rarely give their eyes some rest and that is wrong.

Some years back, I remember always spending so much time with the screen of my phone, instead of buying textbooks I will prefer to download pdfs and read with my phone and in the process of reading I end up spending four to six hours studying with my phone, later on it affected my eyes that water kept dripping down my eyes even when I was not using my phone. That was a bad experience though and thank God I did something about it quite early.

Whenever we view the screen of our phones, tablets, computers, Televisions for too long, we risk the health of our eyes, it causes a condition known as digital eye strain and this is as a result of the light rays that is being emitted from the screen, the screen of our phones, computers, television and in fact any digital device emits blue rays known as high energy visible light and this light penetrates our eyes which can damage the retina of the eye (the light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye) and may later result to something very drastic if care is not taken.

Aside the eye strain, extended exposure to screen light can also cause myopia which is known as shortsightedness, when you look at the screen too long your eyes tend to focus more on the screen and when it is done continuously the eyes will grow longer and that will eventually cause myopia.

That’s not all, when we spend too much time viewing the screen, it will definitely trigger headache and that will make us uncomfortable.

So now we know the effects of excessive exposure to screen light, we can equally tackle out how to prevent or let’s say reduce the effects of these effects. And the ways of preventing or protecting your eyes are:

1.Avoid looking at your screen for too long
2.If you are an office worker and it will require you making use of the computer for long hours I will advise you buy and wear blue light blocking glasses ( screen protection glasses) this glasses will protect your eyes by filtering the blue rays that is being emitted from the screen.
3.Always endeavor to use the eye care settings on your mobile devices
4.Always visit your doctor for regular eye checkups.

The eye is a small organ but it is indeed a very important organ in the body, it is the window to the body and if the eyes is being neglected, other organs will suffer the effects of it. So I urge everyone, children, teenagers, office workers, game enthusiast etc to practice proper eye care and avoid prolong exposure to screen light.

Rightly said. I have issues with my eyes because of using excessive screen time. I wish people and I also would be more careful about this.
