Alright today we are going to talk about accountability, it's meaning, why you must be accountable and how it impacts us as individuals. Firstly let's kick things off by defining the term accountability.
WHAT IS ACCOUNTABILITY?
- Accountability is all about answerability, blameworthiness , being liable to give account of things or situation. in other words it's means being responsible.
#WHY YOU MUST BE ACCOUNTABLE?
- This term is not just a word but something and a sense we owe to ourselves, alot of times i have heard people saying it's none of my business, so if everything is none of your business, then which is your business?
We are now in a generation were accountability, responsibilty, trustworthiness, carefulness is a thing of the past. - As an individual you owe it to the entire society to be accountable and responsible, it makes you a better individual and exposes you to limitless opportunities.
Alot people search for talents everywhere, why do they search for a specific individual with the qualities they need? Why do you think about 100 people goes for a job interview and only 3 or 5 will be employed?
It is not really favorism most times but this people met the standard they deem necessary for the particular position which the individual is about to occupy.
You can expect to be hired by a financial institution when you can't even give a proper account of transactions, welfare of the institution and so forth. This is not just applied to financial institutions alone but to any company or enterprise, personally i won't employ such a person. He or she would definitely mess up my years of hardwork.
HOW ACCOUNTABILITY IMPACTS US AS INDIVIDUALS?
When you loose your sense of accountabilty and responsibilty you loose alot of things, you loose track of your line too. This causes a problem in anything you wish to involve yourself in, because when you fail to be accountable people run away from you.
- As people run away from so does opportunities run away from you, you have alot to loose when you fail to be accountable.
I could remember what happened about 6 - 7 years ago to me, i went to visit a friend of mine at his shop. I got there and saw a man greeted him casually with my two hands, i didn't know who he was nor even seen him before. I passed him to meet my friend inside the shop, we started chatting as usual when he asked me about things and life.
I told my friend life was good that i was managing something to sustain myself that i can't really rely on my family for everything.
(Then i was actually doing a labourer job for my dad, he got a contract and i was working for him as a labourer, he paid me whatever it is i worked, no bonuses or stuff like. He would normally give others but not to me)
So the conversation continued , when i told my friend i came back the previous day to check on the house and clean things up a little.
I had no idea the man i greeted earlier was a police officer and he was paying attention to our conversation. After my chat with my friend he called me, i went to answer him with nothing in my mind. ( There were still alot of guys sitting down beside him )
He gave me money to buy him call card, i went around and couldn't find the one for the amount he gave to me. I came back to inform him, he said okay i shouldn't worry.
I stayed for about 20 minutes more i left and went back to my place. Later that night my friend chatted me up on Facebook, that officer Henry said he wants to see the next day.
I mean i was shocked , i asked him show is officer Henry? He said the guy that sent you message yesterday when you came to my shop.
I was surprised and scared, i thought to myself what did i do wrong. Obviously i couldn't sleep that night , the next day i went there around before 9am, fortunately enough i was there before him. I asked my friend why the officer wanted to see me if anything is wrong? He said he doesn't know, the officer just asked me to tell you to meet him here today.
I was nervous and decided to wait it all out , I waited for about an hour and he arrived. I greeted him , he replied me . Asked me if i have eaten, i told him yes. He said come let's go and eat, we went to the eatry he insisted on me eating again.
After that we went back to my friend shop and he told me the reason why he asked to see me was that he overheard us yesterday discussing, that he picked interest in me. He know told me that he has a car at the maintenance and he was posted outside my area, he would love me to supervise the maintenance on the car till it's fixed. I was surprised, i said okay sir there is no problem. He handed the keys over to me. But sir you don't even know me what if i run away with your car? He smiles and said to me.
You are not that kind of a person.
The car was fixed few weeks later, he came and picked it up. Since then he doesn't joke with me.
My reason for telling you this is to inform of how accountabilty/responsibilty can pave for you.
Just a conversation he overheard lead him into trusting me .
Be yourself and be accountable and responsible to yourself. It pays to be responsible.
