Hi all, how is your weekend going so far? I am so glad to again share post on Weekend Experiences, as there is a prompt that I do have something to share on.
The prompt that I will be doing a post on is:
What is the one food you hate but were made to eat as child?
What Food is That?
The food that I hate and being forced to eat as a child is egg plant or some might known it as brinjal. This is the bright purple plant fruit like plant that one see at the wet market or supermarket. Appearance of it looks really enticing due to that colouration and I think we do not really see other purple fruit plant in the market.
It is quite obvious to spot it and for a child it is something that many inquisitive children will be fascinated and attracted to. While I was equally fascinated when I was younger and asked my mum for the first time if I can have a taste of it, I truly regret that request to my mum. That bright purple egg plant upon cooking by my mum looked totally different from how it is before it is cooked.
And the above was how it looked like after egg plant is being stir fried. Up till today when my mum makes it, it still look like that. As a kid, the sight of it looked horrible. It essentially looked like a plate of someone's vomit. Worse it also had a smell which couldn't really be covered even after putting a fair bit of garlic. The first time I tasted it, phew it was awful and up till today that taste when I first ate it still lingers in my mouth. On looks, it's bad, on taste, it had a funny taste and the mushy texture sums up everything that this will be something that I will never want to taste.
Everybody Around Me Loves It
However, egg plant is something that my other family members, my extended family love to eat and even my wife love to eat. Since young whenever the egg plant is being served on the dinner table, I will just gracefully swap it far away from me so that I can avoid looking at it and the smell of it is further from me. To make matters worse, because of the health benefit it brings with such as Vitamin A and C, a loving mother would always encourage their children to eat so as to improve their health. But sorry, no matter how good it was, no way I am going to swallow that pile of vomit ever again after that first time which I tasted. Time after again, my mum and my aunt (mum's elder sister) will always nag me to have a bite whenever they prepare this dish.
During other family gatherings, the egg plant was my family's favourite dish and everybody just love it so much and they will laugh at me and said I am missing out on a delicacy. While the plates serving the egg plant is always polished clean after such gathering, even when so many of them enjoy it, I found no motivation to eat it. Even during my university exchange program which I had in Shanghai, my student host invited me to his house and there it was, a plate of stir fried egg plant that I dreaded to see. While it wasn't nice to not eat something prepared by the host, I had to politely decline and apologise to him that I couldn't take the dish.
Wrap Up
Up till today, I am still saying no to egg plant. No matter how good everyone say it is, I just couldn't bring myself to eating it. So far, I haven't been able to overcome this and yes this is my most hated food that I would like to share with the community. If you have some method of cooking egg plant that make it more appealing, you can share with me. Who knows, I might be able to overcome this hate for egg plant.
Have a great weekend.
