When I was much younger, I used to hear tales of how good my country, Nigeria, used to be economically and how strong our local currency was compared to the naira. In fact, as of 1960–1973, it was said that one would exchange less than one naira for one dollar, but fast forward to the present day, and the naira has embarked on a massive downslide. Tonight, while doing an analysis, I realized that if we save one naira daily for the next few years, we still won't have saved up to a dollar using the current value of the dollar as a yardstick. This is quite disheartening and makes me fear for the future of our country and the currency.
It's still fricking unbelievable that saving the least of our local currency for the next four years still won't amount to just one fucking dollar. I mean, does that even sound sane or reasonable given the heat? What, then, is the usefulness of such a local currency when it can't even amount to a dollar in four years and yet you've been paid just a few of it to survive each month? Looking at the wages people are paid, I can't help but wonder how they survived and went When I took a deeper look at the lives of most civil servants, I realized most survived with loans because their wages couldn't cover just three of their monthly needs, not to mention all.
I really feel for those who only earn in naira because inflation keeps rising by the day and our currency keeps crumbling as well. If you don't have multiple streams of income, it'll really be difficult to survive, and I'm grateful I at least have a hive blockchain that saves the day for me on multiple occasions, and that's why I usually regard my offline job, which eats up most of my time, as my side hustle, while I take the hive as my actual job because, in reality, in some months I earn way more than I do offline here.
If you don't know how bad this currency devaluation is, just imagine what you can do with one dollar in your country. Then imagine that one person's local currency, which ought to have the same value when saved for years, can't still amount to one dollar. It's ridiculous because one dollar can't buy more than three bags of pure water here, meaning that even if you embark on such a savings sphere, you still won't be able to afford three bags of water, which you'll normally exhaust in less than two weeks.
If you like, keep sitting comfortably with your naira-paid job without seeking multiple streams of income, especially those that are paid in dollars. The next few days, months, and years will explain further reality to you. Half a word they say is enough for the wise. Be wise and seek multiple streams of income so you won't live your life with regret in the near future.
