At a time when most metal bands were well defined by their musical genre, on September 14, 1993, an album titled Focus was released by Cynic, who already had as main members and founders, guitarist and vocalist Paul Masvidal and drummer Sean Reinert, members who at an early age had made an important contribution, in what is perhaps considered one of the most appreciated albums of the Death Metal genre, and it was Human de Death in 1991. On the one hand they already came with a certain reference in the musical movement, but with the release of what would be Cynic's first album, from my point of view, they set a before and after standard for Death Metal, demonstrating an impressive talent in composition and musical fusion between other genres such as jazz.
Although, from that point of view that fusion, was the main engine of being a misunderstood band for that time, where Death Metal was marked by the nuances, of being characterized as a heavy music, with instruments and heavy vocals in a guttural style, apart from the very essence of dressing usually in black. Cynic ignored this musical stereotype and tried to mix clean and heavy sounds, both for the instrumentation and vocals.
En una época donde las mayorías de las bandas de metal, estaban bien definidos por su género musical, saldría un 14 de septiembre de 1993, un disco titulado como Focus de Cynic, quienes ya tenían como principales integrantes y fundadores, al guitarrista y vocalista Paul Masvidal y el baterista Sean Reinert, integrantes que a temprana edad habían hecho una importante contribución, en lo que quizás se considere uno de los discos más apreciados del género Death Metal, y se trataba de Human de Death en 1991. Por una parte ya venían con cierta referencia en la movida musical, pero con el lanzamiento de lo que sería el primer álbum de Cynic, desde mi punto de vista, marcaron una pauta del antes y después del Death Metal, demostrando un talento impresionante en la composición y fusión musical entre otros géneros como el jazz.
Aunque, desde ese punto de vista esa fusión, fue el motor principal de ser una banda incomprendida para ese tiempo, donde el Death Metal estaba marcado por las matices, de caracterizarse de ser una música pesada, con instrumentos y voces pesadas al estilo gutural, aparte de la esencia misma de la vestimenta normalmente de negro. Caso que Cynic hizo omiso, ante tal estereotipo musical, y probaron con la mezcla entre sonidos limpios y pesados, tanto para la instrumentación y las voces.
From beginning to end, when we listen to this musical jewel, we notice that important musical contribution, where we can appreciate the characteristic sounds of distorted guitars of guitars, but that at the same time change to the beat with a clean sound and with a style closer to jazz, as well as the use of scales of the same. While on the other hand the drummer, Sean Reinert, included for this album the application of electronic and traditional drums, with an excellent handling of more progressive tempos.
Now, the vocals too, were characterized with guttural vocals and electronic vocals, which was not usually used in the Death Metal genre, and that currently there is no band that can be assimilated in the sound of the Focus album. However, as I mentioned before, this was partly a negative point for the band, because many Death Metal fans did not take this album with pleasure, because they did not see it as a pure Death Metal sound.
De principio a fin, cuando escuchamos esta joya musical, vamos notando esa importante aporte musical, donde se puede apreciar los sonidos característicos de guitarras distorsionadas de guitarras, pero que a la vez cambian al compás con un sonido limpio y con un estilo más cercano al jazz, así como el uso de escalas de la misma. Mientras que por otra parte la batería, Sean Reinert, incluyó para este álbum la aplicación de batería electrónica y tradicional, con un excelente manejo de tiempos más progresivos.
Ahora, las voces también, se caracterizaban con voces guturales y voces electrónicas, que no era usualmente utilizada en el género Death Metal, y que actualmente no existe alguna banda que se pueda asimilar en el sonido del disco Focus. Sin embargo, como había mencionado anteriormente, esto fue en parte un punto negativo para la banda, debido que muchos aficionados del Death Metal, no tomaron con agrado este trabajo discográfico, porque no lo veían como un sonido netamente puro del Death Metal.
Even, it is known an anecdote about this band, after the release of Focus, they toured with the bands Cannibal Corpse and Vader, which was very catastrophic for them, because many came to boo Cynic, for not having that characteristic sound and image of what would be a metal band like Vader and Cannibal Corpse, which in itself were musical groups with a very extreme and heavy sound.
Then Cynic, as a band disbanded, perhaps because of that constant unhealthy criticism for their musical contribution, at a time when they were actually ahead of their time, and later would become a reference for Death Metal and progressive music, leaving an indelible mark with their album Focus, which is a cult musical album for many.
Incluso, se sabe de una anécdota sobre esta banda, luego del lanzamiento de Focus, hicieron una gira con las bandas Caníbal Corpse y Vader, la cual fue muy catastrófico para ellos, debido a que muchos llegaron abuchear a Cynic, por no tener esa característica en sonido e imagen de lo que sería una banda de metal como Vader y Cannibal Corpse, que en sí eran grupos musicales con un sonido muy extremo y pesado.
Luego Cynic, como grupo se disolvió, quizás por esa constante crítica malsana por su aporte musical, en una época que estaban en realidad adelantados, y que luego se convertiría en un referente para el Death Metal y la música progresiva, dejando una huella imborrable con su disco Focus, que es una disco musical de culto para muchos.
