Every single day of my life, I try my best to mind my business. I do not understand why certain people who aren't advocates make it their life’s duty to encroach on other people’s businesses. I had a very eventful week last week and the most ludicrous part of it occured on Friday.
I went to campus to write an exam and after the exams, the school shuttle buses had all managed to varnish. This left me with the only other option; take the regular public transportation back home. My head felt really heavy and processing any new information was not on my to-do list.
After a few minutes of waiting, I was able to board a bus that already had other passengers in it. I sat on the passenger’s seat right next to the driver and the journey was going fairly well until one passenger reached her stop and asked to alight the bus. The bus came to a halt right in front of a very tall and chubby looking young lady. Personally, I find tall people admirable and so that was not a problem to me at all.
The problem, however, arose when a very elderly woman, say she was in her seventies, who was seated right behind me started ranting. Her source of anger was the fact that the very tall and chubby lady–who had no form of connection or relationship with her– was wearing an extremely short and free dress; what if the wind blew and lifted the dress up?
I get that certain people dress a certain way because more often than not, they feel comfortable dressing that way but this doesn't take away the fact that certain dresses are without a doubt indecent. Every single person in the bus saw the chubby lady and probably had a thing or two to say but kept their thoughts in their head. This elderly woman on the other hand wasn't having it.
The hilarious part was that the bus was en route and had long passed the tall chubby lady who was unfortunately the subject of discussion.
The elderly woman started lamenting about how this generation is totally spoiled and how people dress inappropriately and I understood her perspective. Moreover, everyone has the right to express themselves.
However, the elder lady lost me when she narrated a story of a lady she once got into a fight with because she dressed indecently. The story went thus; “the other day, I saw this lady who dressed indecently standing beside her husband. Her panties were showing and they were torn and so I walked up to her and offered her my ankara wrapper to tie round her waist. The married lady gave me a slap and in the heat of the moment, I dragged her to the ground and we began fighting.”
Her narration seemed filled with lies because first, this lady was with her husband and second, her husband would notice a torn panties if that was the case, third, how come the husband didnt do anything to separate the fight?
Like every other story I hear from strangers, I took this story with a pinch of salt.
The elderly woman kept ranting but at this point, I had heard enough and decided to block out the noise. Eventually, she got to her stop and as she alighted, another female passenger–who wasn't related to her– stepped down with her and the very first thing the elderly lady did was wrap her hand around this woman’s waist, caressed her waist and then said “you’re lucky you're wearing panties”.
I was astounded!
Mesmerized would be an understatement if I were to describe how I felt in that moment. We have never met, I do not know you from Adam, our paths have never ever crossed before but you thought it right to badger me without my permission….because? Hehe.
The woman who she did this to seemed not to have a problem with it and again, it was never my business. Soon after, I reached my destination and hurried to the comfort of my bed.
But then again I wonder why some people find it extremely hard to refrain from interfering with matters that do not directly concern them? This is one of the major reasons why people get into trouble because they give inputs that they were not asked for. Take the elderly lady for instance, what if she encroached on a hot tempered person’s (with no atom of respect for their elders) business? Then what?
It's always best to speak when spoken to, otherwise, remain silent.
