I am someone who likes the anime genre related to mystery, and detective, and the dark side of the storyline makes me interested in watching it because the experience I get will be more emotional than watching anime of other genres. The first mystery anime that I watched seriously and made me feel like I was in it to solve the mystery was "Death Note", which was released in 2006, but I just watched it in 2018 when I was in middle school.
After that, I only enjoyed anime with a lighter mystery genre like Detective Conan, the remake version of Lupine III, and several other titles. Nowadays, I watch anime while enjoying my rest time after work, so if I watch an anime that makes the audience think, it feels like my rest time will be taken away.
In this post, I will share a review of an anime with a Detective theme but packed with comedy and a storyline that is not too mainstream compared to anime with a similar genre. The anime I am discussing this time is Kamonohashi Ron no Kindan Suiri / Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective which was released on October 2, 2023.
Kamonohashi Ron no Kindan Suiri
The anime Kamonohashi Ron no Kindan Suiri / Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective tells the story of a Detective from the First Investigation Division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department named Totomaru Isshiki who always fails to solve crime cases and is considered to have failed as a police detective. One day, he was asked by one of his seniors in the office to meet someone named Kamonohashi Ron to ask for help regarding the serial murder case being faced by the First Investment Division.
Kamonohashi Ron is a graduate of the World's Top Detective Training School B.L.U.E, He became a Detective who was considered the most genius student at B.L.U.E; but unfortunately, Ron was expelled, and his Detective license was revoked forever due to an incident at school. Kamonohashi Ron spent his time in his room for five years until Detective Isshiki finally met him to ask for help regarding a serial murder case.
Ron initially didn't want to help Isshiki solve the case, but Isshiki insisted on asking for his help. After closing himself off from the outside world for a long time and not wanting to know anything about the news, Kamonohashi Ron was finally willing to help Isshiki solve the difficult case. This is where the story of Detective Isshiki and Kamonohashi Ron begins, facing different cases while slowly learning about Ron and B.L.U.E.'s past.
Before watching Review - Detective Conan The Movie 26: Black Iron Submarine, I had already watched the Kamonohashi Ron: Deranged Detective Anime, and in the first episode, I was immediately attracted to the different plot of this detective anime because the character Isshiki here is considered a police detective who is a failure and has no talent in his field. Then, after his first meeting with Ron, they were often together when the police were faced with a murder case. Isshiki's character is careless but could provide another perspective on the case at hand, so Ron realizes this and makes him feel compatible with Isshiki.
Regarding Kamonohashi Ron's ability to investigate the murder that was taking place, Isshiki was amazed by Ron's deductions, and the way he connected clues made this anime interesting to follow every episode. Then, what is still a mystery is the figure of Ron, who has a past that has not been revealed, which is something the audience is waiting for because we are only given a few clues about Ron's past in each episode.
From the visual and character aspects of this anime, in my opinion, it is quite pleasing to the eye, and the movements of the characters are good enough for an anime released in 2023. The studio working on this anime is Diomedéa, which has worked on many cool anime like Ahiru no Sora, Futsal Boys, Beatless, etc.
In terms of the story packaged by this anime, I think it is a little unique from other detective anime. I see that Ron's figure is the key to many of the mysteries present in this anime, but Isshiki's role is no less important. He is the person who can uncover all the murders under Ron's direction because he can't act like a Detective because of his past.
Final Thought
For those of you who like anime with the Detective, mystery, and a touch of comedy, you might like Kamonohashi Ron: Deranged Detective because apart from being skilled at deducing murder cases, Ron is also always present at crime scenes with a different appearance and style so as not to be recognized as a Kamonohashi Ron, a former detective from B.L.U.E.
But, there is also something that I feel is a bit boring in this anime, namely the character of Isshiki who doesn't show any development while facing various murder cases with Ron. I hope Isshiki can become a character who develops and doesn't depend too much on Ron.
