From Dust They Rise: An Introduction to the Necrons in Warhammer 40,000

Hello ! Awesome Community, fellow Hivers, and friends!😁😀🐝

In this post, we’ll explore the origins of the Necrons. Who are they? Where did they come from? How did they become the machine warriors they are today? Let’s dive in.

Small Background Summary

The Necrons are a race of mechanical warriors, created from the ancient Necrontyr. They have lain dormant in their stasis-tombs for over 60 million years. Predating even the Eldar, the Necrons are ancient beyond reckoning. Now, as they awaken, they seek to reestablish the supremacy of the Necron Dynasties across the galaxy and restore their domain—the Infinite Empire.♾️

Origins

The Necrontyr,
The Necrontyr emerged from a harsh, radiation-scarred world orbiting a volatile star. This hostile environment shaped their bleak and fatalistic worldview, as their lives were painfully short, plagued by radiation sickness and cancer.👾

This brevity of life drove their obsession with legacy and the afterlife. They constructed vast monuments and tombs, which served both as celebrations of their technological achievements and as mausoleums for their dead. Their society was organized into dynasties, each led by a Phaeron.

Despite their advanced technology, the Necrontyr were consumed by envy and hatred for the Old Ones, a powerful and ancient race whose seemingly eternal lifespans mocked the Necrontyr's fragile existence.

Driven by their envy, the Necrontyr expanded across the stars—not to explore or enlighten, but to escape the death sentence of their homeworld and challenge the Old Ones, whom they believed hoarded the secrets of immortality.

The Necrontyr's Homeworld

The Necrontyr's planet of origin was a barren, radiation-blasted wasteland, hostile to all life. Their bodies were riddled with sickness, and their lives were spent in constant fear of death. Their cities were little more than sprawling tomb complexes, with only a few temporary dwellings for the living.

The Necrontyr built these cities with their short lifespans in mind, creating cyclopean crypts and ancestral tombs that vastly outnumbered homes for the living. The living were seen as mere temporary residents in the vast cities of the dead.💀

The Transformation to Machines

The Necrontyr sought to overcome their mortality through science. For thousands of years, they tried to adapt their frail bodies to survive their planet’s conditions, but they eventually realized this was impossible.🤖

Instead, they turned to the stars. Although their spacefaring technology was far inferior to the Old Ones, they developed stasis crypts and living metal to withstand the rigors of space travel. Where the Old Ones could traverse the galaxy in seconds, the Necrontyr relied on slow-moving ships to spread across the stars.

This technological leap would pave the way for their eventual transformation into the Necrons—soulless, immortal machines.👻

What Are Necron Tomb Worlds?

Tomb Worlds are planets scattered throughout the galaxy where the Necrons entered hibernation millions of years ago. These planets were once thriving centers of Necrontyr civilization.🛕

After their transformation into soulless machines and their brutal war against the Old Ones, the Necrons retreated to their specially constructed stasis tombs to wait out the ages.

Now, after 60 million years of dormancy, the Tomb Worlds are reawakening! Ancient machinery hums to life, initiating the slow process of revivification, freeing the Necrons to reclaim the stars and restore their empire.
