A warm greeting to all those music lovers. I am pleased to share my trumpet interpretation of “Heaven”, a contemporary pop song with R&B and soul influences composed by Julia Michaels along with Uzoechi Emenike, Tayla Parx, Morten Jensen, and Brian Garcia. The lyrics speak of love and doom, the attraction to the forbidden, and the internal struggle between what is right and what is tempting. The song is part of the soundtrack of the film Fifty Shades Freed (2018). The tempo is moderate with rhythmic patterns that generate a groove that propels this piece forward. This song is written in the key of G minor and a 6/8 time signature, it has a simple, expressive, and at the same time moving melody. I was rehearsing early in the morning, adjusting to the routine again, and I came across this piece. So, I took some time to listen to the original version a couple of times, and then record it.

At university I am taking a class called Family Relations. This week we were talking about the levels of intimacy. The outer level is the garden, where we interact with neighbors, acquaintances, and passersby. The inner level is our home, family, and a few trusted friends; inside our room are our dreams, goals, and expectations. It is important to consider how accessible or closed we are, how far we can let people in, and what requirements we have for them to enter. In our culture, we tend to be very accessible and can be invasive in the lives of others. A neighbor may criticize the way you have arranged the furniture in the living room, or we may be tempted to talk about raising our children. I learned that the lock is on the inside and that we are the holders of the keys to our privacy. Each one of us sets parameters and rules at different levels.

Heaven
Love's my religion, but he was my faith
Something so sacred, so hard to replace
Fallin' for him was like fallin' from grace
All wrapped in one, he was so many sins
Would have done anything, everything for him
And if you ask me, I would do it again
No need to imagine 'cause I know it's true
They say, "All good boys go to Heaven"
But bad boys bring heaven to you
It's automatic, it's just what they do
They say, "All good boys go to Heaven"
But bad boys bring heaven to you
You don't realize the power they have
Until they leave you and you want them back
Nothing in this world prepares you for that
I'm not ashamed that he wasn't the one
Had no idea what we would become
There's no regrets, I just thought it was fun
No need to imagine 'cause I know it's true
They say, "All good boys go to Heaven"
But bad boys bring heaven to you
It's automatic, it's just what they do
They say, "All good boys go to Heaven"
But bad boys bring heaven to you
I still remember the moment we met
The touch that he planted, the garden he left
I guess the rain was just half that effect
No need to imagine 'cause I know it's true
They say, "All good boys go to Heaven"
But bad boys bring heaven to you
It's automatic, it's just what they do
They say, "All good boys go to Heaven"
But bad boys bring heaven to you
