Raven survived. Now we struggle with recovery

Last week was a difficult week for me and my parents. I wrote in this post about how she ate a rat killed by rat poison and had been fighting for her life for almost 3 days until the vet came to flush her system.

Well, things went south really fast after that night. The next day seemed like it would be her last as I remembered a story about how people feel a burst of energy a few hours before they take their last breath. I felt like Raven had felt her burst of energy the previous night and that day was meant to be her last.

She had been on a strict ORS diet but even that seemed insufficient. She refused to let the solution stay down her throat and even getting it into her system was a major problem. I felt so tired. I tried for hours and she only let just a little quantity into her mouth.

I left her alone that night and went to bed with tears in my eyes. I was so sure my little puppy wouldn't make it to the next morning. I called my brother and a friend to pour out my sadness for the night.

I imagined that if she made it till the next morning with that amount of weakness I would call her vet to come to take her to the clinic and make her passing easy and less painful. I pretty much left her for dead. I lost every hope of her recovery.

My mother felt the same way. She began to ask where we would bury her in the compound and how we would go about digging a deep pit and disposing of her body and all possible options.

With all these thoughts and plans, you can only imagine the joy I felt when I was woken up at 2 am by the sounds of her water bowl moving around in the kitchen. I went over to see that she had drunk all her ORS and was thirsty for more.

My puppy woke up that morning stronger than ever and since then, she's been getting stronger. She's getting her fur, body and voice back at such a fast rate you'd almost never imagine that she was left for dead only 3 days ago.

She had been feeding on only ORS for a while until yesterday the vet suggested we begin feeding her some thicker fluids so we began feeding her custard twice a day.

I have no idea how this all happened but I've got my puppy back and stronger than ever. She's back to being the pest I've gotten to love and from all indications, she's not even a little bit repentant after eating that rat.

Yesterday she began chasing lizards around the house and chewing on bones left by our big dog. Although her feeding isn't entirely back, she's gradually getting her life back. She nibbled on some bread today and ate some meat and fish. We're being hopeful that in the next few days she'll be completely healed so we can bother less about her.

Her death would have really hurt me. I'm glad we didn't have to go through that.
