[EN/ES] Strategies to identify the parts of the book / Estrategias para identificar las partes del libro

We all know the importance of books in the development of children, we can say that the interest in reading begins when children have contact with books, even before they can read properly, because sometimes they ask us to read them a story; and to encourage children's love for books is to support the development of future readers.

Todos sabemos la importancia que tienen los libros en el desarrollo de los niños, podemos decir que el interés por la lectura inicia desde que los niños tienen contacto con los libros, incluso antes que puedan leer propiamente, ya que a veces ellos nos piden que les leamos un cuento; y fomentar el amor de los niños por los libros es apoyar el desarrollo de futuros lectores.

And because of a school activity in which my son's teacher asked them to identify and know the parts of a book, we decided to complement this activity by making a small book at home, so that the activity would be a little more creative and less theoretical, and thus, in addition to learning to identify the main parts of a book, he would also be motivated by reading and writing. Y a propósito de una actividad escolar en la que la maestra de mi hijo les pidió identificar y conocer las partes de un libro, hemos decidido complementar esta actividad elaborando un pequeño libro en casa, para que la actividad fuese un poco más creativa y menos teórica, y así, ademas de que aprendiera a identificar las partes principales de un libro también se motivara por la lectura y escritura. The parts of a book / Las partes de un libro

Our first activity consisted of identifying and defining the fundamental parts of a book, for this we focused on identifying the front cover, back cover, spine and pages, and on the front cover we highlighted the relevant information that every book has, such as the title and the author's name. For this activity I showed my son several books, and I pointed out each part, showing him how they are elements found in every book.

Nuestra primera actividad consistió en identificar y definir las partes fundamentales de un libro, para ello nos enfocamos en identificar la portada, contraportada, el lomo y las paginas, y en la portada resaltamos la información relevante que tiene todo libro, como el título y el nombre del autor. Para esta actividad le mostré varios libros a mi hijo, y fui señalando cada parte, mostrándole como son elementos que se encuentran en todo libro.

And to reinforce this activity and make sure they are familiar with the vocabulary of the parts of the book, we made a template of a book, with labels to identify each part.

Y para reforzar estar actividad y asegurarnos que se ha familiarizado con el vocabulario de las partes del libro, elaboramos una plantilla de un libro, con etiquetas para identificar cada parte.

And then I asked him to use the labels to identify the corresponding part and repeat the words he is using.

Y luego le he pedido que utilice las etiquetas para identificar la parte correspondiente y que repita las palabras que está usando.

My first book / Mi primer libro

Once we discussed the parts that make up a book, and to evaluate what we had learned, we got to work on making our own book; the strategy we followed was as follows, we began by deciding what would be the content of the pages, and in consensus we decided that this book would have riddles, a story, a narrative and a poem. We helped my son choose the riddles, the story and the poem, and for the narrative he described his adventures at school.

Una vez que discutimos las partes que componen un libro, y para evaluar lo aprendido, nos pusimos a trabajar en la elaboración de nuestro propio libro; la estrategia que seguimos fue la siguiente, comenzamos por decidir cuál sería el contenido que llevarían las paginas, y en consenso decidimos que este libro tendría adivinanzas, un cuentos, una narración propia y un poema. Le ayudamos a mi hijo a elegir las adivinanzas, el cuento y el poema, y para la narración el describió sus aventuras en la escuela.

His narration also contained a page with moving elements, something like 3D storytelling.

Su narración también contenía una página con elementos móviles, algo como los cuentos en 3D.

Once the content of the book was ready, we numbered the pages and made a table of contents, as well as an introduction describing the content of the book.

Una vez que el contenido del libro estaba listo, enumeramos las páginas y elaboramos un índice, y también se elaboró una introducción en la que se describe el contenido del libro.

Once we had all the pages ready, we went on to elaborate a cover, which contains the title of the book, the author's name and an image. In this case the author's name is his name, to emphasize that the author is the one who writes the book.

Listas todas las paginas pasamos a elaborar una portada, esta contiene el título del libro, el nombre del autor y una imagen. En este caso el nombre del autor es el de él, para enfatizar que el autor es quien escribe el libro.

Then we made the back cover of the book, put all the pages together in order and glued them to shape the book, adding glue on a ribbon that would serve as a spine. This is how our book turned out.

Luego hicimos la contraportada del libro, juntamos todas las páginas en orden y las pegamos para darle forma al libro, añadiendo pega en una cinta que serviría de lomo. Así quedo nuestro libro.

This information is very useful for children, as it will allow them to locate a book and access its contents, so that they themselves will be able to look for the information they need to prepare their tasks, guided by the external parts of the book, such as the spine and the cover, to find such information.

Esta información es muy útil para los niños, ya que le permitirá localizar un libro y acceder a su contenido, con lo cual ellos mismos serán capaces de buscar la información que necesitan para elaborar sus tareas, guiándose por las partes externas del libro, como el lomo y la portada, para encontrar dicha información.

On the other hand, this activity has other benefits:

• It favors the development of confidence and security in their ability to search for information, to act with initiative and autonomy regarding their tasks.
• It favors self-exploration of texts, selecting the literary manifestation of interest, thus becoming a good reader.
• Motivates the writing and production of texts, such as stories and narratives, with which children can express themselves freely and put their creativity to work.
• Children also learn about the correct handling and treatment of books.

Por otro lado, esta actividad tiene otros beneficios:

• Favorece el desarrollo de la confianza y seguridad en su capacidad de búsqueda de información, para actuar con iniciativa y autonómica en lo que respecta a sus tareas.
• Propicia la exploración propia de los textos, seleccionando la manifestación literaria de su interés, convirtiéndose así en un buen lector.
• Motiva la escritura y producción de textos, como los cuentos y narraciones, con lo cual los niños pueden expresarse libremente y pongan en marcha su creatividad.
• Los niños también aprenden sobre la correcta manipulación y trato que deben recibir los libros.

And well, despite the fact that nowadays practically any information is just a click away, books are still a very valuable source of information, ideas, illustrations and the data we need to perform any task, for our recreation and learning, not to mention that it is one of the most valuable creations of mankind, so we must convey to children the value of books, in order that they can appreciate and preserve them to continue transmitting their value from one generation to another.

Y bueno, a pesar de que hoy en día prácticamente cualquier información está a un clic de distancia, los libros siguen siendo una fuente muy valiosa de información, ideas, ilustraciones y los datos que necesitamos para realizar cualquier tarea, para nuestra recreación y aprendizaje, sin mencionar que es una de las creaciones más valiosas de la humanidad, por ello debemos transmitir a los niños el valor que tienen los libros, con el fin de que puedan apreciarlos y preservarlos para que continúen transmitiendo su valor de una generación a otra.
