Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - The Great Unit Review Wheel! post!
Now known as the Unit Review Library!
What is it all about? It is not there to just give a stat. It is there to give MY review of the unit!
Also this has become quite the Challenge! With so many units to review in the game the consensus in the hobby community is that I will not have enough time to review all of the Datasheets before the new edition of Warhammer 40,000 came out.
I should have started when 10th edition launched!
414 days since the start of 10th Edition.
This is Review #103, I am 311 reviews behind! Another slight gain...
Picking them randomly, let me spin the wheel again and see what I get:
Space Marines, Vanguard Veteran Squad with Jump Packs
10th Edition Codex
Vanguard Veterans are elite Jump pack troops employed by the Space Marines. They represent members of the 1st Company using Jump Packs in a mission.
Vanguard means that they are there for close combat, but they do have a lot of redundant pistol options to choose from.
The 9th Edition version of these guys had a massive variety of close combat weapons wielded by the Vanguard. They no longer have such weapons, instead wielding "Vanguard Veteran Weapons".
The only credible option to me is for them to have Storm Shields and gain them a 4+ invul save.
It costs 105pts to field a squad of 5 and 210pts to field a unit of 10 models. It costs $60 to buy a squad of 5.
Let's look at those stats!
Stats
Movement 12"
Toughness 4
Save 3+(armor/invul/Feel No Pain)
Wounds 2
Ld 6+
OC 1
Weapons
These guys start out with Bolt Pistols and can change any number of them for the following:
Plasma Pistols
Inferno Pistols
Hand Flamers
Grav-Pistols
Storm Shield (This gives them a 4++ save... I would rather go for these)
Ranged:
Bolt Pistol
Range 12", 1 Attack, Hitting on 3+, S4, Ap 0, D1 Damage each
Pistol (Can shoot with this weapon while in engagement range of enemy models, close combat)
Plasma Pistol - Standard firing option
Range 12", 1 Attack, Hitting on 3+, S7, Ap -2, 1 Damage each

Plasma Pistol - Standard firing option
Range 12", 1 Attack, Hitting on 3+, S8, Ap -3, 2 Damage each

Inferno Pistol
Range 6", 1 Attack, Hitting on 3+, S8, Ap -4, D3 Damage each
Pistol (Can shoot with this weapon while in engagement range of enemy models, close combat)
Melta 2 (When firing at a target within 3" gain 2 Damage)

Anti-Vehicle 2+ (Causes a critical Wound on a roll of 2+ against Vehicle units)
Melee:
Vanguard Veteran weapon
4 Attacks, Hitting on 3+, S5 Ap -1, 1 Damage each
Abilities
Deadly Demise D3 (When it is destroyed, roll a Dice on a 6, all units within 6" of this unit suffers D3 Mortal Wounds)
Vanguard Assault
On the turn they charge they gain Lethal Hits, which mean 6's to Hit, automatically wound.
Thoughts
So if I wanted to harass my enemy with a unit of 5, I would go for 5 Stormshields.
If I wanted to make a suicide unit that must deal loads of damage, I would try go for a 5 man unit with Inferno Pistols to Melta something's face off and charge into combat.
A 10 man unit is a bit expensive so unless you want to invest in a character to lead them and buff them.
I have a unit of Wolf Guard with Jump Packs which is now represented by this Datasheet.
That makes 4 Space Marine Datasheets Reviewed putting them on 4.3% Completed! The total Completed is 10.60% Complete! Can I review them all?!
Thank you for reading!
