Votes and Anti-votes on Hive: Should You Be Worried?

As a blogger on the Hive blockchain, there is nothing more anticipated than an upvote or series of upvotes on your beautifully crafted posts. While this is usually the desired end for most bloggers on the Hive blockchain, sometimes, we receive a notification of a vote, but this time, it is not the time of vote we anticipated, this time, it is a downvote.

What could have gone wrong? What am I doing incorrectly? Who's downvoting my post? We wonder!

In this post, I will be exploring some conditions in which a downvote is imminent and why you may not have to be worried.

The Downvote Trend

Before I delve deep into this, let's talk about a downvote trend I have observed. Almost everyone on the blockchain has received one or more downvotes in some of the contents they share. But there is a somewhat unnerving trend in place, The Anti-Voter.

Here is what I am talking about. Let's say a post is being curated by @ecency, you may notice the anti-voter (or anti-curator) who places a downvote. Let's look at this table:

VoterAnti-voter
EcencyXecency
YouXyou

You probably must be worried about this, if especially you are a newbie, but how worried should you be?

I think, not so much, most times, these anti-voters may not have as much downvote strength or maybe, do not apply as much downvote force on these posts, thus, resulting in a very insignificant change in a post's worth.

However, it is possible that these anti-voters may grow in strength in the future, but we can't tell. And the motivation behind this remains unknown.

If you have got a better explanation about this trend, please, your comments are appreciated.

The Downvote Culture

With that out of the way, are there situations where a downvote could be necessary? The answer is a resounding yes.

Some situations that could lead to you being downvoted are:

  • Not adhering to the rules of the community
  • Sharing a plagiarized content
  • Sharing images that are copyrighted
  • Spamming, and much more.

So, look out for big users (whales) downvoting on your post and politely make an inquiry about this.

The Conversation around Downvotes

There could be other times that a downvote is significant and clearly unwarranted, a downvote that could result in a significant reduction in your reward value. What could be wrong?

This is clearly speculative, based on my conversation with a few users around the downvote situation. There is a speculation that some rather significant anti-votes you receive may not be your making, but may result from differences among whales.

While this is highly speculative, it does not rule out the possibility of this occurring.

Are the whales fighting? There is definitely a lot going on under the hood that we may never come to know about. But I strongly believe that grievances could be expressed differently, and conflicts resolved amicably without the downvote bombs.

Feel free to share your thoughts on this and critique my opinion kindly if need be.

What can we do to stay safe from downvotes?

I've not been downvoted ever since I joined the hive platform so don't really know how it feels like but I believe it will be a bad one for those who have.. thanks for sharing this piece, it has greatly helped..

Ya. Its not a nice experience. A downvote may not seem so bad at all till it's a significant one.

I think the downvoting trend is a bit scary and I try my best to avoid it, especially since the ones happening now aren't with reason.

Hopefully, it stops and people can go back to normal.

It's painful to be downvoted after how many hours of writing, mostly when you are blacklisted and downvoted everything
They punishment should reduce for guilty one, some have no knowledge about it because they are new

It's quite unfortunate. At least a warning or two would have been nicer.

Hive Blockchain could be a very sensitive place. One just needs to trade with utmost caution.

You are right, everyone should be given a second chance
My friend got blacklist today, i just have to beg her not to quit because it was really discouraging
Just one mistake, everything gone
All her remaining good posts

I have noticed some of these accounts too and the downvoting strength is insignificant.Your post on the trend is helpful..Thanks for sharing

I don't know what usually go down behind the scenes within these whales but I think whatever it might be it is in the best interest of all if they can settle it out without affecting the general public the way it is going presently.

I can't seems to see any justification downvoting someone's content by the anti-voters without the person have broken any rule.

That's just so true. It's like a parent flogging a child for an unresolved difference with a spouse.

Hahahahah these parents should settle their differences for the sake of us the little children.
