I'd almost given up hope of these ever turning up. I figured, if they didn't, I'd just assume the physical book existed out there somewhere. But luckily, the notice for them came this week, which was pretty neat, since the book itself is roughly one week away from release.
So I'm glad I got to hold it before it actually became publicly available.
I tell people it's my first book, and some people around me have trouble with that. Years ago, I put out a small collection of short stories I'd written here, on Steemit Hive. So in a sense, that's the first book, definitely. But this one's different. This one, you can feel the improvement, if I do say so myself. It's like talking to a whole different person, which I suppose, in all fairness, isn't too far off center.
This one really took me to new levels, both in terms of the writing, and production. I made the cover for the book, which I now appreciate is a little off-center also, so thank heavens for pre-launch copies, right? Just fixed that.
I made the maps that go on the inside of the book.
There's something tremendously exciting about doing this sort of stuff. Because writing, that I know I can do. I didn't know I had a trilogy in me, I thought that was something to be had sometime later in my writing career. I never saw myself as a trilogy kinda writer.
Someone recently asked me how I got to writing this, and the truth is, it was sheer arrogance. Well, sort of. I was reading Robin Hobb's Farseer books, and getting immensely irritated with them. And since it's the habit of most writers to become inspired by whatever it is they're reading at the moment, I started writing a story about a medieval castle, and a prince, and a bunch of other things. I meant it to be a short story, but it wouldn't quit, so now, here we are. Book two's almost done now, just gotta tweak a few things, and that's mostly done, so it'll (hopefully) roll out in early December.
Which leaves the final book to be written (hopefully in my new abode), and scheduled for release in March.
As someone who despises overly long battle scenes in film, writing, or anywhere else, really, it's poetic that so much of the series revolves around a battlefield. Though, I dare say, it's not your run-of-the-mill military book. In fact, I can guarantee that. I wouldn't know where to start.
Luckily, it's not just about fighting. Most of it isn't, actually. It's about growing up and out of your former self, and it's got pirates and magic, and a bunch of other things that I'm really freaking excited about.
I'll probably make another post about it on D-Day, but that's all for now. Just wanted to show this thing to you.
What are you up to?
P.S.: Yes, the pictures are taken on my bed. It's moving-chaos over here, the bed's probably the only photo op sans the IKEA logo at the moment. xD
