Hello all Hivians and good people of the Gems community. Most of us may not be aware of some major happenings or events around the globe that took place on this day many years ago. I will therefore take us round the globe in a giffey to have a look at some of those historical events that took place on this day, monday the 02/09/2024 in history.
We begin today from London , England - the Great Fire of London. Do you know that on this day in 1666, the Great Fire of London started inadvertently in the house of the king's baker; it burnt for four days and destroyed a huge portion of the city, including Old St. Paul's Cathedral and over 13,000 houses.
Still in London, England, do you know that on this day in 1965, Lennox Lewis became the first British boxer to hold the undisputed heavyweight world championship since Bob Fitzsimmons held the title in 1899.
From London, England we move over to the world of air disasters. Now, on this day in 1983, Swissair Flight 111 crashed off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, killing all 229 people on board; it was later discovered that defective cables caused the plane's combustible insulation to catch fire.
From the world of air disasters , we move over to Belarus. On this day in 1945, World War II was brought to an end when Japanese Foreign Minister Shigemitsu Mamoru and General Umezu Yoshijiro signed Japan's formal surrender aboard the USS Missouri.
Gentlemen, we'll round off our today's look in history from Vietnam. Do you know that on this day in 1945, Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnam independent from France.
My good people, that will be all from me today. Let's do it again tomorrow.
