Hello all Hivians and good people of the Gems community. Most of us may not be aware of some major happenings or events around the globe that took place on this day many years ago. Thus, today, I will take us round the globe to have a look at some of such historical events that took place on this day Monday the 26/8/2024 in history.

We begin today from the Vatican City. Do you know that on this day in 1⁹78, Albino Cardinal Luciani was elected pope as John Paul I, but he died from a heart attack 33 days later. His reign as Pope for 33 days was the shortest in modern time. He was also the first Pope to choose a double name 'John Paul'

From the Vatican City, we move over to Ethiopia. On this day in 1975, Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I, who led his country into the mainstream of African politics after World War II and oversaw its admission to the League of Nations and the United Nations, died in Addis Ababa at the age of 83, presumably assassinated.

From Ethiopia, we move over to the land of the Pharaohs, Egypt. Now, on this day in 1936, after 50 years of British occupation, Egypt gained sovereignty as a State following the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty.

From the land of the Pharaohs, we move over to Indonesia. On this day in 1883, the volcano Krakatoa in Indonesia erupted, killing 36,000 people and causing a tsunami.

We'll round off our today's look in history from Malaysia. Do you know that on this day in 1983, Nicol David is a Malaysian squash player who dominated the sport in the early twenty-first century, becoming the first to win eight World Open titles (2005-06, 2008-12, 2014) was born in Penang, Malaysia.

My good people, that will be all for today. Let's do it again tomorrow.
