Welcome back to my #running blog!
After the beach marathon the 9th of Februari I made a quick turn around and set my eyes on the NN Marathon Rotterdam on April 13th. While a quick turnaround sounds easier than it is done as doing 4 marathons within 365 days is putting quite some stress to the body - therefore it is important to listen to your body and make adjustments where needed.
Today’s run
While it was cold, with -3C and a harsh wind, the sun was also shining and because we didn’t see any rain last few days it was not slippery. I went running with a friend, who continued his easy run for another few km and ended up at 18km.
We let the heartbeatmonitor dictate the pace, targeting average of 138bpm to help stimulate the recovery - making this a gentle but very fun morning run!
How to listen to your body?
Most of the times we listen to our body is after we hurt ourselves, and resting is then the best threatment. After heavy runs, I always do an injury check run the day after, before muscle pain kicks in a light run can give important signals where to pay attention to or where you didn’t listen in time. While important- this is too late for the next run.
One way to prevent finding out vulnerabilities too late is to do a mindfullness exercise “body scan” once or twice a week. Here you first allow yourself to relax and then systematically evaluate your entire body piece for piece (with your mind). I use guided programs with this as I find it difficult to relax myself and find that a nice voice can do this for me a lot better (plenty of great 30 min scans on Spotify)
Yesterday I did a body scan and noticed some slight discomfort at the inside of my right knee. No pain, but a signal my body is giving me. Not paying attention can lead to overuse injury , but making a small adjustment and I should be able to continue without too much issues.
My knee was signalling that I should incorporate some more strenght and balancing activities rather than more fast km. Doing so , I expect to be able to prevent an injury and complete my schedule as planned!
Happy running!
