The Peak of Winter Cold
This week, we've had continuous snowfall and freezing days. The cold is expected to peak early next week, with some forecasts predicting temperatures dropping below -10°C. That being said, compared to when I first moved to Europe 14 years ago, winters have become noticeably warmer. I still remember when -15°C days were quite common.
In any case, I brought my lemon tree, kumquat, and even my yuzu inside—just to be safe, even though yuzu is said to withstand temperatures as low as -18°C.
Given the harsh weather, my outdoor gardening tasks this week were minimal. The only thing I did was cover some leafy greens on the balcony with fleece. I had actually planned to do this earlier, but I got too cozy indoors, and by the time I finally got to it, there was already snow on them…
Finally I got up and covered my shungiku (edible chrysanthemum) planters with fleece. I really hope they survive. The irises, however, were too tall to cover. Since this is my first time using fleece, I have no idea if I did it correctly… I guess I'll find out next week 😅
By next weekend, the high temperatures are expected to rise above 10°C. Hopefully, this is the coldest it will get this winter. I'm looking forward spring 🌸
Starting Seedlings for Spring
There's a local culture center in my area that holds a plant market every spring. I once had a booth there when my daughter was still very young, and I had a great time. I reached out again this year and managed to secure a stand 🙌
I came across some nostalgic photos from 2019 when I participated in the market last time. I remember selling Shiso (Perilla) seedlings while sharing seeds and knitting socks as a Mother's Day gift.
Back in 2019, I hadn't started my gardening and food business yet, and I couldn't drive. I carried my seedlings in cell trays and paper cups, trying to make transportation as manageable as possible. Looking back, it was very amateurish—but I guess that's how businesses start 😅 Good memories.
This year, I plan to sell Shiso seedlings with the Shiso syrup I produce locally. The plant market is still two months away, but germination and seedling growth take time, so I’ve started early. Since it's freezing outside, I set up my gardening mat indoors, put on some jazz house music, and enjoyed a cup of coffee while working. I found winter gardening tasks like this are also enjoyable ☺️
This year, I wasn't fully confident about using only my home-saved Shiso seeds, so I bought some from a Nordic organic seed company. The person who saved the seeds has a Nordic-sounding name, which made me smile as I imagined Shiso growing in the north and the careful hands that collected the seeds.
Giving Away Our Good Old Gardening Product
At the plant market, I also plan to give away some leftover stock of Mobile Garden, a product I designed and produced with my partner about ten years ago, on a donation basis to anyone interested. Mobile Garden was once featured on TV and sold about 20,000+ pieces to individuals and businesses. However, despite using recycled plastic, I was never fully satisfied with the material choice. Then, life got busy with raising my daughter, and eventually, my business partner decided to close the company.
I still have about 200-300 units at home, and with Mother's Day approaching, I’d love to put them to good use.
This product took my partner and me to many adventures; we found a company, we visited events, presented it on a TV show, and we even brought it to New York. It holds a lot of memories.
That's it for this week. Starting this weekend, my daughter’s winter break begins, and we’re heading to Portugal. I’d love to share a post about wandering through the streets, discovering plants, just like I did during Hive Fest.

今年の冬の寒さのピーク
今週は雪が積もって寒い日が続いています。来週の初めまで寒さのピークで、予報によってはマイナス10度を切る日もあるようです。とはいえ、ヨーロッパで生活を始めた14年前と比べると、暖かくなっているんですよね。昔は普通にマイナス15度のような日があったのを覚えています。いずれにせよ、レモンと金柑、念のために耐寒性がマイナス18度まであるといわれている柚子も家の中に取り込みました。
そんななので、今週の外での作業は、バルコニーの葉物のプランターの一部にフリースをかけたくらいです。フリースをかける作業はTODOリストに入れていたのですが、家の中でぬくぬくしていたら出遅れてしまい、すでに雪がつもっていました・・・・・。
さすがにまずいと重い腰を上げて、雪の当たる春菊のプランターにフリースをかけました。春菊が無事であってほしいです。背が高すぎてフリースをかけられなかった菖蒲も。初めてフリースをかけるので、このかけ方で合っているのかは謎・・・来週わかります😅
来週末は最高気温が10度を超えるようで、今がこの冬の寒さのピークだといいな。春が楽しみです 🌸
苗を作り始めました
私が住んでいるエリアには、カルチャーセンターのような場所があって、春には植物市が開催されます。まだ子供が小さかった頃に一度出店して楽しかったので、問い合わせをしてみたら、スタンドをひとつ確保できました。
2019年に出店したときの懐かしい写真が出てきました。紫蘇の苗を売りつつ、種を分けつつ、母の日のプレゼントの靴下を編んでいたのを覚えています。
2019年はまだ園芸業も食ビジネスも始める前で、車も運転できず、なんとか運べるように工夫した育苗トレイと紙コップ入りの苗・・・ものすごく素人くさいですが、そうやってビジネスってはじまるものですよね、多分 😅 良い思い出です。
今年は地域で生産している紫蘇シロップの宣伝も兼ねて、紫蘇の苗と紫蘇シロップを売ろうと思っています。植物市はまだ2ヶ月先ですが、この時期は発芽も苗の成長もゆっくりなので、余裕を持って苗を作り始めました。外は極寒・・・ということで、家の中で園芸マットを敷いて、ジャズハウスの音楽をかけてコーヒーを飲みながら作業を始めました。こういう冬の作業もよいですね！
今年は紫蘇の種が自家採種のものだけでは心もとなく、北欧のオーガニックの種苗店から購入したのですが、採種した方の名前が北欧の方の名前っぽくて、北欧で育つ紫蘇と、種取りをしている北欧の方を思い浮かべてふふふと思いながら種をまきました。
思い出のガーデニングプロダクトのプレゼント計画
前述の植物市では、10年前にデザイン・生産していたMobile Gardenというプロダクトの在庫を寄付ベースで興味を持ってくれた人にプレゼントしようと思っています。Mobile Gardenはテレビで紹介されたこともあり、個人と企業向けに2万個ほど売れたのですが、リサイクルとはいえプラスチックを使っていることに納得がいかず、子供が生まれて子育てのばたばたもあって、会社を育てきれず、最近相方が会社を清算しました。その在庫がまだ家に200-300個ほどあり、母の日も近いし、いいことに役立てたいなと思って。
テレビ出演に、いろいろなイベントに、最後はNYにも連れて行ってくれた思い出のプロダクトです。
さてさて、そんな感じでスローでありつついろいろやることも出てき始めた2025年のガーデニング。今週末から子供の冬休みが始まり、ポルトガルに旅行に出かけます。Hive Festのときのように植物を見ながらの街歩きの様子を投稿したいです。
