Three years ago was one of the toughest years of my life. A lot happened so fast, leaving me off balance. Although I knew I could figure things out my own way, what I really needed was a listening ear - not someone to preach to me, but just someone to listen as I ranted or expressed my pain.

I was still working at a firm before I resigned, but I had a colleague who wasn't just a colleague - she was a sister and a friend. That morning, as I resumed work, she noticed something was off. Prior to that time, I was the 'life of the party/office'; never a boring day with me. But suddenly, I became as cold as winter.

I walked gently to my table and didn't know someone was watching. I wasn't so motivated to work, but missing work was tantamount to dismissal. That was my only source of income as at that time.

For the sake of this post I'll name her "Mia." Mia sent me a quick SMS as we weren't allowed to loiter around during work time.

"Hey, are you okay? You're so cold today." As soon as the message popped on my screen, I just read and ignored.

I knew I wasn't even ready to talk about it but all I wanted was a hug, maybe my heart could share all that burdened it to another heart via a hug.

During break, Mia insisted to know what the matter was, so she came to my table and hugged me from behind.

Honestly, it was as though she read my mind. That hug meant the whole world to me and it was like I found solace in her arms.

"What's wrong?" She whispered while she tightened her arms around me.

I held her very close and couldn't even say a word. "Whenever you're ready to talk about it, just know I'm here for you."

My heart melted. Like how did you know exactly what I wanted? That evening after work, I poured my heart out to her. Mia listened and sealed it with a hug.

I don't know if this has ever happened to you as well. There are people who truly understand you even without a word. Your eyes says a lot to them, your body language and a little shift in your habit.

These ones are the most important people in your life, who noticed every detail about you.

Sometimes your heart could be bleeding and a message from them could just be "Hey are you fine? I thought about you today and I just want you to know you're so special."

A thoughtful message like that can just lighten up your mood. We also need to pay attention to people around us. When there is slight change in their behavior we want to take the initative to reach out to them. When we notice they do not feel inclined to talk, we don't want to force words out of their mouth but just say something kind, or assuring to them.

When someone crosses your mind, don't hesitate to say a kind word to them or a prayer for them. It could be the universe directing you to them for a reason.

I felt inspired to share this post because something similar happened not quite long.

This time, the person demanded for hug outrighly. I mean, she just walked up to me and say "can I get a hug please?" I could relate so well and then I gave her a hug for a few minutes.

This happened in school today where I'm currently taking my fashion upgrade class. I could tell she was burned out from the stress and probably other things eating her up.

I'm glad I could make her feel better for a little while before class resumed.

Although sbe didn't tell me in detail what went wrong but I was glad to see how relieved she was after the hug. She sat close to me all through the class and at intervals, rested her head on my shoulder indicating she was tired of something.

The upgrade class is no joke I can tell as i'm crrently having sleepless nights from projects and all, so I understand a little what might be going on in her life.

Aside the sleepless night, it's mentally, physically and financially draning and who knows whether she's thinking of the next project and how to sort it out. She must have been so overwhelmed.

All I could say to her was.. "This too shall pass.. You are stronger than you know!" We all are fighting silent battles and the least we could do as humans is to be very kind to anyone we meet. In words and in deeds. It will help them carry on and hang on to the tinest thread of hope.

What a nice message! Sometimes all we need is a little connection to help us through a tough day. Although I usually dislike being hugged, I do appreciate small gestures that show someone is there. Just simply taking the time to ask someone what's on their mind can make such a massive difference!

I'm glad you got a hug on a day that you needed it, and were able to give one back to another friend on a different day. Connection spreading through kindness is one of life's coolest magics I think πŸ’—
