I'm not a foodie. I like it probably as much as the next person, but my skills for aesthetic perfection when it comes to food? They're pretty shit to be honest.
I grew up in a house where food was a focal point of 'family time' and a large portion of celebrations revolved around sharing food. Christmas was a big thing where there was always way too much food, the spread would take up a 3m table easily. My mom could cook pretty much anything - in the microwave! Swear to you, she perfected it somehow and was able to cook a beautiful roast chicken with crispy skin and all. For the entirety of my life that I can remember - she never owned a stove.
She didn't actually teach me how to cook anything either. I learned stacks of other things from her, but kitchen stuff wasn't in the curriculum. We baked together a lot though. Oat crunchies by the pan full, ginger biscuits and fudge in two flavours. She enjoyed baking much more than cooking, I got that from her for sure!
While the food that I cook now tends to be pretty average fare (it's simple, ticks the boxes required and generally tastes half decent), it certainly isn't something you'd see in a magazine and I tend to be ok with that on any average day.
I don't know why, but I didn't get my culinary mojo back properly until recently.
Tonight's dinner was simple but tasty. I made chicken schnitzels with sliced cheese and mushroom sauce accompanied by cauliflower, broccoli and corn on the side. It was actually quite damn delicious. It didn't look too shabby either.
I polished my plate. Lory didn't finish hers but she raved about the mushroom sauce and veggies. I'm sure she'll be wanting her leftovers for breakfast.
It was kinda fun making this food. I still have a huge complex around making food. I think this dish tasted better than my photos let on. Hopefully soon I'll be super adventurous again and roast something. You never know...stranger things have happened.
What do you guys think, would you eat that?
