This is a value for value post: see the explanation in the footer.
Here's a classic example of why you must not trust Associated Press. I've written a long essay about my experiences working there in 2003 in the past.. You can no longer trust AP because they are no longer journalists: they are an activist group working for terrorists.
WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY?
Everybody knows those are the basics of any story. But when AP want to write their agitprop they will either ignore, or flat out lie while answering any of those questions.
From the current wires is this story [1]:
AP: Israeli strike on mosque kills 19 as it bombards northern Gaza and southern Beirut
Because this is a wire piece, that headline and most of the story will run unedited on thousands of sites and a few might change a word here or there.
Here's the lede, this vaguely covers the "who", "what" and "where":
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — An Israeli strike on a mosque in the Gaza Strip early Sunday killed at least 19 people, Palestinian officials said, as Israel intensified its bombardment of northern Gaza and southern Beirut in its widening war on Iran-allied militant groups across the region.
Let's try to find the other parts of the story. Here's something close to a "why":
Israel is still battling Hamas in Gaza nearly a year after its Oct. 7 attack, ...
Note the less than clear use of "its" which you could wrongly infer as relating to Israel's attack on Oct 7 not Hamas's attack on Oct 7.
Here's some more "what" and "why":
The strike in Gaza hit a mosque where displaced people were sheltering near the main hospital in the central town of Deir al-Balah. Israel said it targeted a Hamas command and control center embedded among civilians, without providing evidence.
The site was housing "displaced people" in the mosque according to the all knowing AP without providing evidence and Israel's explanation is explicitly caveated as with "without providing evidence".
An Associated Press journalist counted the bodies at the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital morgue. Hospital records showed that the dead were all men, while another man was wounded.
An AP journalist in Gaza is obviously a freelancer operating under the Hamas rules that almost nothing goes out which paints Hamas in an unfavorable light. AP doesn't make this clear. And the journalist never claims to be at the strike site (to observe the claim of displaced people).
But there is one key detail in there: did you catch it?
Hospital records showed that the dead were all men,
💥 Bingo 💥 this is the literal smoking gun. IF this was an IDF strike on displaced people, why did it kill only MEN? No women, no children? HOW?
The rest of the story departs from this incident. Which of the five foundational questions hasn't been answered yet?
WHEN
The story doesn't give even a day, much less a time of day. However there is a full IDF statement on this strike [2] and that was issued at 03:07 local time and begins:
IDF: A short while ago, with the direction of IDF and ISA intelligence, the IAF conducted a precise strike on Hamas terrorists who were operating inside a command and control center embedded within a compound that previously served as the 'Ibn Rushd' School in the area of Deir al Balah.
So we now know this was somewhere between 02:00 and 03:00 local time. Not exactly busy time for prayers. Can you see why AP wanted to ignore the time of day?
No women, no children, just men (and lots of them) all gathered in a school or mosque (both of which have been used for by Jihadis to gather in and plan Jihad attacks) and across Gaza hundreds of schools and mosques were found filled with weapons and with tunnel entrances.
All in the middle of the night at 2am.
AP are not journalists. This is agitprop.
