Hello all and welcome to another "Tales from the Video Store" installment. Today, I am going to have a little confession time and talk about one of the times I really screwed up at the video store. Let's get into the story.
It all started on a busy shift at the Video Store. I was working with multiple other employees and the store was slammed. I honestly don't remember what day it was but the amount of customers meant that it had to be a weekend day or a holiday. At the start of our shift, as mentioned in a previous blog, we would all pick a movie to play on the multiple screens in the store. So we had 3 movies sitting next ot the VCR ready to go.
The shift went as expected and we were busy. It consisted of checking movies in, helping the lines of customers, running movies back to the shelves, etc. Our shifts were 7 hours and 3 movies (one for each of us) tend to run about 5 to 6 hours. Needless to say, we would eventually need another movie but we weren't worried about that.
The mistake was the perfect storm of events. The 3rd movie ended and it just so happened that it was the busiest time in the store. Lines of people were waiting and there wasn't much time to go pick out another movie. The credits ended and the 3 of us were still slammed and as soon as the movie went all the way to the end of the actual tape, the store was filled with horrible static. This is the last thing we wanted. So I left my customer and ran to the VCR and there was a case with tape in it laying on the shelf right above the VCR, so I opened the case and popped it in. Sweet audio relief for everyone.
I went back to my customer and was busy working and not paying any attention to the screens. Most of the time it was background noise anyway and I had the customers to focus on. After about 10 minutes the crowd at the counter had subsided and we had a chance to breathe. A man from the store came up to the counter, got my attention and asked, "Are you going to leave this on, because if you are I am going to hang out here for a while?" I asked him what he was talking about. He replied that the movie I had put in the VHS player had a preview with a scantily clad woman sitting in a chair and talking about some very adult themes. Little did I know that the manager had placed an adult video on the shelf above the VCR because a customer had said it didn't work and it would have to be checked later by her to see if the tape was faulty.
I ran over to the VCR and quickly removed the tape and much to my relief no adult content besides some questionable audio had been shown throughout the store. I learned a valuable lesson that day, to make sure and take the time to read the VHS tape I was putting into the VCR, instead of being in a hurry because of the crowd of people waiting. No one complained to the manager and I didn't get into any trouble. So I was grateful for the man bringing it to my attention.
I believe this is the first time I have mentioned the adult room that we had in the Video Store in my blog. What would you have thought about that interesting audio being played throughout the store? Did the Video Store you went to have an adult section?
Thank you for taking the time to read this blog and I hope that you have a great rest of your day!
