Art Or Damage Control?

in #hive-1743012 years ago

The whole thing started at the end of last year, sometime in December, when I saw a video on YouTube and could not get it out of my head. The final work was not exactly my style as those golden leaves seemed kitschy, but the pattern beneath looked great.

I've never worked with acrylic paint on canvas, so the whole thing was new to me, that's why I did not want to jump in both feet, without learning the basics. The first thing I did was contacted an artist friend for some guidance. It was a big help as at least I knew what to pay attention to. I also watched some videos to know what I'm getting myself into, but the truth is, you can never be prepared for what's coming in art, especially if it's the first time.

So after the new year's craze was over, I started to buy the necessary supplies and today I took a deep breath and started working on my masterpiece.

After some thinking I decided to go with these colors, which for me represent autumn. Ok, that light green is more like spring, but I did not like the other options available.

20230117_110230a.jpg

Bought some popsicle sticks as well, to be able to mix the paint. Plastic cups I had a few at home and also decided to use gloves, which was the smartest decision and you'll see why.

The video mentions the use of Floetrol, which I did not buy as they didn't have small tubes. After watching some videos, I decided to go with my argan oil, which I saw it is commonly used. So my initial attempt was paint, white glue and argan oil

20230117_110341a.jpg

The size of the canvas was a bit bigger than on what people are practicing, but as I planned to do one painting, so I bought the size I wanted to put on my wall, in case I get something decent, which was a 35cm x 40cm size.

20230117_110453a.jpg

Good thing it was primed already, had 3 coats applied, so I did not have to deal with priming it myself.

20230117_111112a.jpg

This was when I started to get nervous. You know the feeling, just like in school. You know the lesson, but when you have to answer the questions, you can't remember anything. For me, the biggest fear was wasting supplies and time. Although I know even the biggest artists also failed a hundred times till they did it right.

20230117_112015a.jpg

These were the colors I decided to use. At some point I thought it would be good a darker green and a lighter brown, but after some thought I decided not to complicate things. My knowledge of paint mixing consists of some vague recollection of elementary school art classes, so I did not want to risk much.

20230117_113401a.jpg

This was where I started not to like the outcome, but was still confident the end result will be something I wanted.

20230117_113814a.jpg

After applying the black paint (those sports were intentional, not accidental), I prepared the wet paper and dragged it over the paint. Please disregard those white lines and that is the reflection of the light above my head.

At that point the whole thing was like watching water boil. I was waiting for the cells to form, but they didn't want to.

20230117_115330a.jpg

So after like 15 minutes, when I saw nothing happened, I decided to repeat the last phase in the opposite direction, to avoid getting too much black. This was when I started to realize I made a terrible mistake and I'm not going to get anywhere with it.

20230117_115629a.jpg

There were a few cells, but so tiny, barely visible.

20230117_120253a.jpg

I have to laugh here, when I see how many stupid things I did today. So after seeing I don't the result I wanted, I thought I'd try with another layer of golden paint. Yeah, walking the same path and expecting different outcome. 😂

20230117_120556a.jpg

What did you think happened? Nothing! Of course! So at that point I knew I won't get anything out of it, so I decided to go rogue an do some stupid things, like pouring paint on the canvas and repeating the wet paper phase.

20230117_123016a.jpg

This time I got something different, which was still far from what I wanted. I mean the right part looked interesting, but the rest was terrible.

20230117_123151a.jpg

20230117_125657a.jpg

Then I thought why not try to repair one side that did not like and this happened 😳

At that point I had to make a decision and I did. What was it? I can't tell you as it's a long story, so I'm going to show you tomorrow.

Today I'd like to apologize to every artist. I didn't want to mock painting, but with my attempt I brought shame to the industry 😂 I hope @castleberry won't see it as he's going to mute me and put me on his shitlist 😂

So tomorrow I'm going to show you the damage control I did and tell you the lesson I learned. Yes, there's a lesson to be learnt as otherwise all this was in vain.

Sort:

I did something similar a few years ago, but I did pouring instead of swiping. It was very satisfying to see the pour develop. I even ended up pouring on coasters, and made a bunch which I gave out to people in the Bangkok steemfest. I know some people really like cells, but I'm not a fan of them at all, I make sure I pop all mine if they appear.

Your colour combination is lovely by the way, especially before you did the double pour in the end

I remember your coasters. Lol, so you're a cell enemy!! Not nice!!! 😃

I liked these colors and did not want to mix them with other colors. Let's see what I'm going to do next time. I like this technique as it's easy, but there's room for improvement. I need to find the right ingredients and some pattern I like.

I like the process you went through. After seeing my dad do so with his own paintings my whole life I understand that it's the process that counts.

I agree with you, the process counts a lot. As they say, the journey is important, not only the destination.

You created several works of art in the process. We are lucky to be able to chronicle creation with photography.

I found this stage quite intriguing, including the paint lines on paper. Too many wonderful stages. Yet you continued on and discovered more and more. Awesome. Definitely ART!!!

Many thanks. Indeed it's a privilege to be able to document everything in a post. The one you picked was interesting indeed. But I continued, hoping to get what i wanted.

For me you did exceedingly great, at least you gave it a trial even without proper training and you had other fantastic idea to create. That's something the painters would be proud of..
I know with a little more practice you'll get it right..

I love all slides of your painting.

Thank you @redna, indeed, practice makes the master. Those who are uploading videos to YouTube must have done it several times.

Honestly your right! several attempts before the success..
But the success is comforting!!

its looks really amazing @erikah 😍

Thank you!

There’s no mistake in art , you just learnt how to do something new and you’re already teaching us and even making content out of it ! Great job friend , hope to see more of you on here !!

There’s no mistake in art , you just learnt how to do something new

I suppose that's true.

Great job friend , hope to see more of you on here !!

Thank you! Well, tonight I posted the second part of it and I'll be back with something else very soon.

I’m glad about that, I’ll check straight away

I love seeing all the beautiful steps to the outcome you actually wanted!

Showing the steps is essential on Hive, not to mention if the work is good (not in this case), it can be motivating to others too.

I actually really like it! The process and the result and the colors. I will say that I do like abstract art though I rarely post it. And I could swear that you had a lot of fun dabbling in all that paint. Now I'm looking forward to tomorrow's post.

Thank you! I like abstract too, that's why this pattern has caught my eyes. Well, I had some fun but there was also disappointment involved 😂 Just posted the second part.

Everything you touch you make it awesome, huh? I remember you telling that you want to get into painting this year. You did really amazing. The work looks incredibly immersive. BTW, for the final layers, did you first let the paint dry or did you go in wet?

Everything you touch you make it awesome, huh?

Me? Naah, this is fake it till you make it 😂 But at least I'm honest and show the world what mess I've done.

BTW, for the final layers, did you first let the paint dry or did you go in wet?

No, I did not let the paint to dry, I did everything without waiting.

I liked them a lot. Some of them reminded me of a lab internship i had. But my favorites are among the first ones, it looks like a yellowish and reddish sunset as the colors of autumn reflected on the surface of the moving water.

Thank you! I love it how everyone sees different things.

I don't understand much about paintings, although I like to appreciate them, but I understand a little bit about art and I have a phrase that I usually say to my dance students is that in dance, mistakes are not only common but important because from them comes improvisation and improvisation in dance is what transforms it into a true artistic expression.
I like to think that the unexpected is commonplace in great artistic masterpieces.

The result wasn't what you expected and maybe it wasn't technically good, but I bet it gave you good reflections on your art and many will enjoy traveling through your work, even though it's far from what you'd like it to be :)
Thanks for sharing.

Improvisation!!! That’s the actual word!! I can relate because I dance too , Again I say there’s no mistake in art , you just created a new style!! As long as it’s not a portrait work an artist is doing , he can create anything abstractly

in dance, mistakes are not only common but important because from them comes improvisation and improvisation in dance is what transforms it into a true artistic expression.

Some of the biggest innovation in history came from mistakes.

We are also learning from our mistakes and that's what makes us better, I think.

Gosh. Having the guts to try is already an achievement. I have always told my friend who loves painting how she manages to finish an artwork as it takes time, effort, creativity, imagination, name it all. Painting has always been complicated for me, I mean, when I witness my friend doing it. I think you still did a great job right there.

Loving the patterns!

You have great understanding about Art , Art takes a lot of time and concentration to achieve a great piece however it’s still a freestyle because whatever you get to achieve with your creativity is just your own way of expressing yourself artistically

Gosh. Having the guts to try is already an achievement.

Took me some time and was really nervous, but if i never try it, I will never have my own painting. Painting is complicated for me too, this is the only form I would try out. I'd rather prefer drawing.

Thanks for the nice comment @charmingcherry.

I love it ! Even it is made randomly but somehow it has a meaning this looks like a female face breathing that deep blue part we can say she's a girl that living in her own world the left side and colourful one and the right side representing the environment she's living in well done and nice colours choice.

Wow !! You have great understanding, I can feel what you’re talking about !! Great insight!

At least someone who's satisfied with it, so thank you! I like what you see in that part, it's very interesting. I would have been happy to get the whole painting like that.
