In our world today, a lot of services are owned by both the government, private and a joint body. And with all of these owned services, they all come with their perks, what makes them unique and different. The most common two are the public and private owned services. The government owned services have its pros and cons just like the private owned services. Just last year, while my friend was doing her youth services, she gained some privileges that not everyone was entitled to except those working with and for the government.
My sister got married a month before going for her camping and when it was time for her to serve, she was already pregnant so she got some preferential treatment. She got the opportunity to get treatment at the best federal hospital at a very cheaper price. All she needed was her card to show she was a serving corper. Luckily for her, her services ended exactly a week after she gave birth to her baby. While others were struggling to get some things, she got it easily and at a cheaper rate. In this aspect, I saw that working for a government owned services wasn’t bad at all.
The major cons of working with a government owned service is the fact that they are mostly the last to get an upgrade. Since there is little or no competition, they are barely moved by the changes around and they take their time to make necessary improvements and adjustments. When my sister gave birth, there was a vaccine she was supposed to give to her child but the hospital said that the government has not sent it yet. And this vaccine was supposed to be given to her child free if the hospital had it. In the end, she went to a private owned hospital to get this vaccine and it costs over 50 thousand naira which is approximately over $35-$40.
And that’s one of the pros of a privately owned service. It is always readily available and updated. My sister was able to get what she wanted but at a very high price. But looking at how important that vaccine was, they were just grateful they saw it. Private owned businesses are fully funded because they are built to make profit and not to necessarily help those who don’t have. And because of that, they are able to always strive in different economic conditions. Since they are self dependent, it makes it necessary to always do better than any government business like them.
For the cons, private owned businesses are not for just anyone. It is meant for those who are ready to pay well for what they want. They care less about welfare and are more interested in the profit and this is because they are operating independently. Sometimes, they don’t care about quality, they are mostly just focused on how much profit they are generating at the end of the month or year. One other good side of private businesses is that they are always very agile. Quick to adjust to any kind of changes that might arise because that’s how they can stay in business.
Basically, most privately owned businesses or services are just trying to fill those loopholes that government owned businesses have. And most of the time, due to how relaxed the government bodies are, they are lacking in so many areas giving the private sector an upper hand in controlling the economy most of the time. And because of this, a lot of persons will always want to work for a private sector than working with a government sector. But then, it is very much obvious that, if the government owned businesses could make a little adjustments to how they operate, they will definitely be on most people’s list.
With all that said, I don’t think I will want to pick one over the other and that’s because they both come in handy at different stages in life. Like I said, they most times complement each other and also, they both have their pros and cons. So, depending on my situation and goals at a time, I might prefer a government owned business or a private owned business.
