My wife started making these lemon ginger power shots a little while back, mainly in the winter during cold and flu season. I don't know if they actually have any immune system benefits but folk lore would say that they probably do based on the ingredients used. Lemon, ginger, honey and turmeric are all believed to boost the immune system.
We usually mix a shot of it in a glass of sparkling water or a glass of water and orange flavored vitamin C powder.
One time I made the mistake of taking a double shot if this straight without mixing it in anything and I basically had a mild allergic reaction to it.
My body got super hot and incredibly itchy all over and I broke out into hives. I'm guessing it was the concentrated ginger that did it. That is my warning to not over do it and take too much at one go.
This isn't an exact science recipe but generally you want a 1:1 ratio of ginger to lemon juice. These are approximations though, and will sort of be dependent on what equipment you use to get it right. To be honest, you can pretty much just wing it and mix a bunch of lemon and ginger together and get the effect that you need. If you use a juicer then you can probably get it a little more premise than a blender too. For simplicity let's say to use one ginger root and 6-7 lemons.
Start by chopping up the ginger and blending it with some of your lemon juice to allow the ginger to blend properly.
You can strain that mixture through a sieve to get rid of the fibrous chunks.
You could toss the fibre or you could use it to make a carrot and ginger soup or something if you wanted to.
Next you juice your remaining lemons to do get that 1:1 ratio approximately.
Strain out the seeds and add the juice and the ginger back to the blender now.
My wife adds some honey to balance out the acid from the lemons - approximately 1 tsp or so. You can add a little more or less depending on your personal taste preferences.
My wife adds turmeric to the recipe as well for color and health benefits - approximately 1 tsp.
My wife makes a fairly large batch each time and puts it in a glass bottle in the fridge.
Our empty Antidote gin bottle is especially fitting for this recipe since the shot is meant to be a remedy.
It keeps fairly well too, and usually lasts us a week or so.
It's pretty powerful stuff so we only ever have one shot per day each (except that one time). Again we tend to mixed it in sparkling water. I find that Orange flavor or lemon work well but pinapple tends to be our favorite.
