Why are students like this?

Well hello, stranger

This post is just a rant. I'm not gonna bother making it look pretty because right now I don't give a damn about pretty. To say I'm pissed is an understatement. I'm beyond that. I'm "ready to invade a new planet" pissed.

I'm a lecturer, I go above and beyond for my students. I'm not saying this from my own biased opinion of "looky me, I'm so good at what I do", I'm saying this for if been told on many occasions, by many people, students, staff, campus board, that I do more than what is expected. I'm also a supervisor and a PDF student. I enjoy academics and teaching the students, guiding them, laughing with them, and showing them tricks on writing. I think my fellow lecturers/ teachers will get what I mean.

Well, today all that I've been giving to them was thrown back into my face.

SPLAT!!

How can someone be like this? Why? What do they get out of it? Is it just fun to go around and blame others for your mistakes? Do they feel empowered? Is it part of a life achievement badge thing that I missed? A side quest on how to be unprofessional? I'm confused and concerned at the same time.

One of my students felt it was necessary to inform me via text message, that she'll be finding a different supervisor. In this text, she attacked my teaching, my supervision and my compatibility with the academic world. Where in life does one send such a text? WHERE? It's beyond disrespectful.

And just before you think "Aa maybe they had a reason". The reason for this text was that I haven't returned her work, which she gave me on Monday... I'm sorry, no one is gonna read and comment on 80 pages in 2 days. No one. Especially not if you are supervising 4 other students who also submitted documents. If you want it back in 2 days, I'm giving you small useless comments. And if you are behind on your work, making it out on me ain't gonna help even the slightest.

Somehow it is also my responsibility to remind her about her due dates, and what needs to be done this week in each module and also assist in writing her work... I don't even know what is happening in the modules, I don't teach them, I'm supervising the thesis. That ain't the point of having a supervisor. You're the student, you need to pass, I'll guide you as best as I can, but it's your responsibility to DO THE WORK. There seems to be this mentality that supervisors are there to do the work, but we aren't. I can't comment on your work if the work doesn't exist. I can't guide you if you aren't willing to walk the path.

The student has been sending texts around our student group about me and someone was kind enough to report her. I don't have the capacity to deal with this.

At this point, I just feel like dropping her. If this is your attitude in your degree how will you manage in the workplace? Will she be one of those who fire her boss when he tells her the document should be PDF and not Word?

Please have a drink on my behalf 🍻. I should get back to the assignments I'm assessing, maybe there is hope for the students.

Thank you for allowing me to rant and get a bit of the frustration out. It's cheaper than a therapist and I can't afford to quit.

Sounds like you need some !BEER

Unfortunately, it seems that these kind of people can still thrive in certain work environments as well. Currently have 2-3 people like this which blame everyone else and the processes for why they are not meeting KPIs while receiving the most support/resources to accomplish their job.

It sounds like you're an amazing supervisor so I'm curious to know how many other students defended you when this one student was complaining? I'm sure all of them which is would be really cool to focus on :)

This sounds like it takes away from the progress the rest of the work team brings in. And like you said, they are given all the resources and support and somehow still blame others. Good luck to you 🍀🤞. I can imagine how draining it is working like this.

And you are right. I should focus on the positive things. A few students have come and reported what is happening on their group. Plenty are defending me, checking in on me and ensuring me that I'm doing everything possible to assist them.

I had a student tell me yesterday that I'm one of the people he looks up to in the academic world. The academic field humbles you, you can have a big ego, everyone is constantly learning and adapting. We all guide each other. And he's words to me was that some students will never be humbled. They have this idea that since they are doing a Master degree they are superior. And no one can teach you that, you have to realise yourself that once you burn a bridge, your on your own. But then you are also isolated and will never gain knowledge from others.

Have a nice day!

Yeah, draining and frustrating. Although, it always seems that these kind of people seem to flourish somehow... It's as if the person who shouts the loudest is always right.

True! Glad to hear that other students did in fact come to your defense so that should showcase your actual value compared to someone just shouting loudly/blaming others. I'm almost certain that you will have plenty of students messaging you later in life about the lasting impact you had on them as well.

I know what it took me around 5-10 years before I reached out to my previous lecturers about the lessons I learnt from them and my appreciation for all the effort they put into their lectures.

I'm one of those people who keep such messages 😅. I have a few from previous students that thanked me at the end of their studies. It proofs that what one does is impacting someone in a positive way.

It's true, some people who impacted my life only found out about it the day I graduatedmy master 😅. I send them all a personal not thanking them for the roles they played and what they gave me in terms of knowledge and lfe lessons.

I'm glad you reached out to them! I promise you they took it to heart and will for ever remember you.

True! And I am sure you will receive many more :)

Yeah, I'm sure they did!

Sorry for the delay in getting to your post! Had some challenges recently but trying to catch up :D

Some people are just assholes, short and simple. This person sounds like she was likely not raised to be responsible for herself and required to do her own things. I wouldn't take it too hard, because it sounds like they've got some deeper issues going on. You will find many more like this, especially these days where there is far less personal responsibility and accountability than there was before. I'm hoping we can turn it around though, someday!
