Hello to all
This is my first post in this community and with this post i participate to the #monomad challenge by @monochromes
On a previous trip to the Greek island of Rhodes I had the opportunity to visit the
old town or medieval city
a place with a history dating back to 1300 - 1500
when the Knights of St. John occupied the island and turned part of it into a fortress
They built this Gothic castle-fortress surrounded by 4 km long medieval walls with seven different gates,in order to protect themselves from the Ottoman invasion
It managed to protect them for several years but unfortunately not forever, finally falling in 1522 after a six-month siege
Nowadays it mainly function as a great monument for visitors and tourists who wish to walk along those old paths once walked by the knights
Medieval clock tower (Roloi)
except from the castle and the walls, this large area is not called a city by chance,
thanks to the fact that it consists of many tourist shops to buy souvenirs, restaurants to eat or café-bars to have a nice time and enjoy the place
All photos are my property and have been taken during a past trip to the island of Rhodes
THANKS FOR VISIT MY BLOG
