A case of the drums

in #hive-150342last month

As previously mentioned I have been playing drums with some friends on some jazz tunes recently. We have only had one rehearsal of this so far, but we had an open mic booked at a local bar. This is something we do now and then with our little community that built up around the pub session I started some years ago. I did not really want to take the whole drum kit and I was inspired by some 'suitcase bass drum' videos I had seen to make my own.

I just used some wood I had in the shed for this. I needed something to support the kick pedal and keep the case in place. That aspect worked fairly well, but as a drum it is a bit quiet. You will see the label on the back move in the video, but it is not really audible. I could try putting a microphone in there to resolve that, but it was just something to try.

Some other people asked me to play with them, so I did a couple of songs with Anne-Marie, part of one is included here, and a few with another duo. Then I played with the band. I included one where I play brushes as that is the first time I have done that in public. The final song is one I sang. Singing and playing drums can be tricky, so I kept the drumming very simple. It ought to have more of a swing feel. As a lot of our songs mention the Moon we are called The Moonshots. That is @purplesinger on piano, @daniellemurray on clarinet and Bob on flute. We should have a bass player at some point.

Harpreet runs this bar, The Angel's Share in Hitchin, and he loves music. He was egging me on to hit the cymbal harder. I was using 'rods' rather than normal sticks to keep the volume down. Drums are loud even without amplification. It is all experimentation as I have little experience of performing on drums outside my home studio or a rehearsal room.

We have another rehearsal next month. Conveniently Drumeo has a jazz course this month. I am two weeks into that and learning a lot. It does include some brush work.

I did give you a glimpse of my new cymbals in the video. I have not had much chance to play those yet, so you will have to wait for a demonstration.

Rock on!

I really love that suitcase idea. It's it a hard shell car? That might be louder if not!

It's semi-hard. Might have to experiment with different beaters. It was something I was wanting to try.

It's very cool. I was impressed at the idea!

Love it! Gotta get creative sometimes :D awesome playing, and love Anne-Marie's singing/playing :) that was an awesome band you jammed with!:)

I'm lucky to have these people to play with. Starting the original jam is one of the best things I ever did.

I thought it worked well but as you say bass wasn't quite loud enough. Good concept for sure.

It's something to experiment with. I think a microphone in the case would pick it up. I will look at more videos of others who built something similar. Initially I was mostly concerned with whether the case would fall over, but it stayed up. It was nice to be asked to play with others and I hope they were happy with my drumming. It's a nice test of my listening powers.

Next thing you know you will be getting a Cajon! That would be pretty cool!

I've considered getting one. I have played them a few times. There are some mini versions you can have on your lap that could be good for jam sessions.

That sounds really awesome. I think I'd love to get one just to relive my glory days, but it would probably drive my wife crazy!

There's a lot of women on Drumeo, but my other half is not keen on the noise at home.

The suitcase bass drum, genius! 😂 Love it

Badass. I wish I had the time & patience to learn an instrument. Piano has always lured me to it, but sadly I never took the time & opportunity to learn. Thats one of those “one day” situations when I have time on my hands.

Either way, I’m always amazed at anyone who is musically inclined. Keep it up fellas! Cheers homie!

Cheers. I've been making music since I was a kid, but never performed much until after I had kids. It's fun and keeps my brain working.

Well, it's an impressive talent my friend.

Respect!

Looks like a fun night out. I love the use of the luggage as a bass drum. That's some cigar box style right there. Pretty cool. If you check out some of the cigar box musicians on YouTube you can find all kinds of cool "alternative" bass drums using all sorts of items, like luggage, boxes, etc. Keep on rocking man!

There's a whole scene about improvising drums from different stuff. This was just a first attempt by me. At least it gave my right foot something to do.

Homemade instruments rule! I'm slowly getting addicted.

LEO Power Up Day - November 15, 2024

The guy playing the trumpet is really emotional, it almost sounded like a song I knew, but hearing the sound deep i dont really now the song he was playing it was emotional though

Who is playing the trumpet?

both Bob and daniellemurray makes up the trumpet sound though. Bob is the one with the flute and daniellemurray is the clarinet the both sounds where combined I see

Maybe it's a language thing, but I wouldn't call those 'trumpets'. They are both woodwind and trumpet is brass. They are both good players though.

They really are I can feel it from the sound, you ain't bad with the drums too
