The News

Things never stand still with Hive, but this week brought a couple of interesting developments.

First we had @leofinance introducing subscriptions. You can pay a monthly fee to access extra content from people who set it up (premium users only). As I understand it they will encrypt posts and your subscription will decrypt them. That is an extra incentive for those who think their content has real value and it could keep earning for them in the long term. Someone did speculate that people could copy the cleartext and re-post it. Khal says they will go after anyone who does that, but Hive remains the Wild West and anything goes.

InLeo Subscriptions

The other big news was @peakd adding Snaps as their version of microblogging. It uses the same basis as others with posts being comments on a main one each day. I do prefer peakd as my main desktop Hive and this implementation already seems pretty good. It works smoothly and you can see just the Snaps from people you follow. The Threads version of that never worked for me. It is evolving daily. They already let you see the microblogs from the other dapps and just added a button to combine those into one feed. That is what I wanted to see. The Hive community is too small to be split up like that. @ecency Decks offers something similar and I think there were some issues about giving access to posts from other dapps.

peakd Snaps

I really think we need such key features to operate across all the dapps. Things like polls should function regardless of which you use. The same with the chat that is in peakd and some other dapps. I tend to use the Ecency app on my phone and would like to see all microblogs on that, not just Waves. Someone said that the dapps want to keep their users loyal, but Hive is bigger than them. They can differentiate on other things, e.g. smart filtering, writing tools and follower management.

I will include my usual price chart. Things are still fluctuating, but $HIVE is maintaining a lead over 'the legacy crapcoin'.

Friday Follows

  • You should follow @asgarth to see his Snaps about the new developments.
  • @sunsethunter has a cool new song with a great video.
  • @epodcaster does NaPodPoMo (national podcast post month) in November. We can all be podcasters.
  • @gadrian does some posts that share news about Hive in a similar way to what I do in these.
  • @mynewlife released the trailer for his film about the Hive wells in Ghana. Share this around.

The Dog House

We get some accounts on Hive that seem to come in with a suspicious amount of knowledge considering that they are new here. Here is an account of one such. If you immediately know all the right tags and pop up all over Hive Discord. It is much better to be honest if you had a previous account or you had help. If your writing looks suspicious too then you are likely to get the wrong kind of attention.

Hive is small and odd things will stick out. People are looking out for them, so we will get caught. Honesty really is the best policy.

The End

You can expect to see me in Snaps, but I have also been active in Threads and Waves. Sometimes I just want to share some information that does not justify a post. You can add some value like that.

Rather than sharing the post rewards with those I mention I will set @commentrewarder as a beneficiary to all commenters can earn more. I tend to prioritise comments from those I mentioned anyway. We need more engagement on Hive.

Some of these new features are pretty cool. The fact that they continue to develop is a good sign. Even if I don't agree with some of them.

We don't have to use every feature, but it gives us options.

I find it sad that part of the posts of the Hivians will be now behind a paywall. Even worse, not only behind a paywall like that from a digital newspaper, but behind multiple paywalls! Somehow this is against the spirit of an open, decentralized social media platform, isn´t it?

What's the problem? I would expect it will be just a very few posts. Maybe someone will offer porn on subscription and we don't have to see it. Hive is an open platform and people can put what they want on it. If they don't get subscribers then they won't bother.

A fascinating doghouse this week. I must investigate further although I am in Ibiza and have seriously restricted screen time. Which I don't mind, I will be back in the saddle soon!!

Enjoy your holiday. Maybe you will come back with some fun stories to share.

!BEER

You never know! I have wished I had my laptop occasionally but that would have been a step to far for the good lady!

Hey @meesterboom, here is a little bit of BEER from @steevc for you. Enjoy it!

Learn how to earn FREE BEER each day by staking your BEER.

Thank you for mentioning National Podcast Post Month. This is the 17th annual event and the 4th time for the NaPodPoMo Hive Community.

Sorry to keep asking you questions, but will you change to Snaps or keep with Waves for microblogging?

I may use both, but I think they should combine.

That's a good idea.

@steevc, I paid out 3.649 HIVE and 0.000 HBD to reward 22 comments in this discussion thread.

I started off by using PeakD. It's intuitive to use and reliable. The addition of Snaps looks like a really good feature. Unfortunately, for me, it has one major flaw. When I go to the Hive Engine on PeakD, I get two error messages:

  • No tokens found
  • Error retrieving data from Hive Engine

if you are talking about Wallet page of Hive Engine it was probably just a temporary error, as it shows fine now for me.

I have this problem every time. Maybe I should change nodes or use Hive Engine on one of the other platforms.

i must admit i don't check my wallet often, i check my Hive Engine even less. at the moment if shows what it should. could be there are problems. When i want to do something with Hive Engine tokens i use other platforms, beeswap, tribaldex...

How much i don't look at it shows that i just found out i have 50 Doge in there :D

You're right. I don't know why I bother looking at Hive Engine - the tokens have a very small value and it's a hassle to convert them.

Have you reported this issue? I go direct to Hive Engine for anything I need with those tokens.

I've managed to fix it by changing the node 😀 So, it's back to PeakD 😀 Thanks for the suggestion - it's probably the most reliable method.

you just have to change the Hive Engine API node in the peakd settings

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

The dapps help create an atmosphere of competition thereby fostering growth and that's good for hive. The Snap feature introduced by Peakd is a result of that. For me waves or thread help me drop ideas that don't qualify for a full post. I hope the spirit of competition continues.

We definitely need short posts as most people will not write long ones and many will not read them. Just see what does well elsewhere. We just need it to be standardised.

It's interesting how there was a lot of resistance to D.buzz. Then, along came #threads, and next up was #Waves. Now you're telling me there are #Snaps. Does that mean certain people have stopped downvoting microblogs?

Not wishing to rake up old coals, but it doesn't seem like a very friendly environment with phrases such as "Caught" and "People looking out for them." As you know, my pet hate is people with massive HP and Rep who hardly post anything and yet earn excessive rewards for curation. One of the benefits of buying your way to the top of the food chain, I suppose?

I wonder which is worse, creating multiple accounts and using all the right tools to maximise your returns or simply buying Hive with fiat to gain more rewards? 🤷‍♂️

i didn't use D.buzz for a while, i think they started as a main post on hive? problem was autovotes on posts. Now solution is to do containers and not post it as main post, so you will not see 10$ rewards on 10 sentences of short content.

my take is, anyone willing to lock its hive for weeks to distribute it to other people deserves part of the reward. it is mining but better, because you share part of it with others.
for me worst thing is selling everything you get and not using it to reward yourself and others.

Some people may not think short posts deserve rewards, but I don't see many being downvoted. I've not used Dbuzz much thous.

The fact is that some people will set out to abuse Hive for gain with fraudulent behaviour. Shouldn't that be discouraged?

What's wrong with buying $HIVE? That's what makes the price go up. Some people choose to invest in it and will expect a return on that. I've bought a bit. Do you understand economics? If you try creating multiple accounts that vote for each other then that may get noticed.

As I've said, Hive is the wild west. You can do whatever you like, but some may object.

I think this is why Hive will struggle to become mainstream. It wants to be all things to all people but is determined to control users. I find it hysterical that stories are told about how $5 HBD can feed someone, meaning multitudes of Krill are desperately trying to eke out a revenue stream, and then along comes some Crypto speculator who buys up power and rewards and sets about ensuring the Krill can't earn.

Sounds a bit like the Tories. 🤣

It wants to be all things to all people but is determined to control users

You still speak of Hive as if it were one thing. There are many differing opinions on what it should be, but it doesn't have to be just one. It's a platform, like Linux, that people are free to build on.

I also don't think that people are trying to kill off the 'krill'. There are some bullies, but that's a cost of the freedom to do what you want.

Sounds a bit like the Tories. 🤣

Few things are that bad.

Aye? What part of "It wants to be all things to all people" did you not understand?

I wouldn't have said there were bullies, but there are a group of accounts with a vested interest in ensuring the rewards pool is not drained too much, thus keeping the value of Hive high, especially those who have invested 𝘧𝘪𝘢𝘵. Now, you may argue that they are investing in the platform, but I know [in business] most investors have long-term goals that are about maximising the return.

As I've said, 'it' is not one thing. Leo, peakd, Splinterlands, blocktrades etc may have different visions. They all have stake in the game and then there are individuals who either got in early and/or invested a lot. Some of those are a bit rogue and they don't answer to anyone.

There's a mix of ideology and 'greed' involved, as in most human endeavours. I think it's an interesting experiment. I've put money in and of course I'd like a return, but I'm not relying on it. I'm having fun anyway.

Loading...

I'll keep using it, but I have no genuine interest in it. I know you, and I disagree on this, but I honestly see it as a quasi-pyramid scheme whereby those above encourage those below to invest time, resources, and, in some cases, money with the promise of moving up the food chain. Curation is a prime example. Curate my work so more people see it, bringing in more votes for me, and I'll throw you some rewards based on your level and resources.

The richer you are on Hive, the more you earn. But it's tough to get richer when you've got feck all, which is why people resort to plagiarism etc. and why the top two tiers make every effort to control the bottom rung.

You have the Tory mindset that everything has to be for personal gain ;) You then make sweeping generalisations about what goes on. I do think it's right that plagiarism should not get rewarded, regardless of who does it. I don't see that honest posters are getting DVs unless there's some personal disagreement involved. You will get some trolls who like to mess with people, but they are the minority.

Do you think investors should not be rewarded? Is it different to buying shares? I see it as better than some other platforms where you need a big following before you make a cent and you can be deplatformed for minor offences.

Hive is not directly comparable with old-school finance. I know your crowd from the FOSS world are not here and some are very dismissive of any sort of cryptocurrency, but others are building things here.

Thank you so much for sharing my new song @steevc !:) Much appreciated!:)

You are very welcome.

I never liked short form content as it is prone to abuse, but I think Snap will be different and I might be on it more often.

I don't think we can just not do stuff for fear it will be abused. We just have to deal with whatever happens, but it will probably be minor compared to the benefits. The fact is that people love short form and we want them to enjoy it here too.

I just had to go down the rabbit hole and open the doghouse link, what a wonderful world it is in he hive, my brain is now frazzled, but I did enjoy the juvenile online back and forth bitching! .....sure beats facebook lol.

Snaps, hmm thing is like Homer once said "When I learn something new, something old drops out"... just need to work out what I can send to trash to free up some storage space

not sure a subscription premium service will encourage onboarding?

Always enjoy your friday stuff

There's a lot of drama on Hive that most people never see. Some put in a lot of effort for finding the abusers and get little thanks.

I think Subs are to attract people who would charge for content elsewhere. Of course we can earn in other ways.

yes, some great people behind the scenes doing their best. unsung heroes?

Ah, nice! I haven't seen the "All" tab yet on PeakD Snaps. That's a good addition, to have them all in one feed.

Thanks for the shout out! I recently discovered that you create these news updates too. But I believe there's room for different styles. 😀

There's plenty of news I miss, so I'll see what you find. I've done #FollowFriday since the early days.

!BEER

Ah, that shows how much we miss on Hive, even from known authors. This is not a small space after all. I started this series thinking nobody covers it and that it was needed.

Hey @gadrian, here is a little bit of BEER from @steevc for you. Enjoy it!

We love your support by voting @detlev.witness on HIVE .

not sure how this will be accepted especially by certai whales - also on Peakd you have now 4 option for short content - hmmm. We will see - not new here and many requested it (Leo was a frontrunner).

Also interesting to see that Elon Musk with X now tries to offer reward for content - reminds me about the tsu times @steevc :-)

We need the short content, but the dapps are each doing their own thing. They need to decide what to cooperate on.

I see Musk likes jumping. He can go jump in a lake as far as I'm concerned.

!BEER

true on short content - but too many in one dashboard on peakd in my view - at least one remeining sign of decentralization.

Re Musk I agree, will not rescue his lake jump.
