Mostly sorted out for Hivefest

in #hive2 years ago

I would hope that everyone is aware that Hivefest will be happening in Amsterdam in September. Once again @roelandp has taken on the challenge of organising an event. This is a return to the city where SF1 happened. I missed that as it would probably have cost me all I had made at that point and I do regret not going. By 2017 I was a dolphin and I decided to go to SF2 in Lisbon, Portugal. That was mostly paid for with my earning. It was a great experience, especially as so many people seemed to know me.

If you are wondering what to expect then I can tell you what I experienced. Each day of the event was at a different venue with transport provided from the official hotels. There were drinks and snacks during the day with a full sit-down meal each evening. That was something I had not expected. There were other evening events such as playing pool with plenty of free beer. During the day there are lots of presentations by the various projects, but some people just seem to socialise.

Roeland at SF2

When SF3 was announced for Krakow in Poland I had to go to that too. These were my first visits to these countries, but I was so busy with the events that I did not do a huge amount of general exploring. SF3 was equally cool with more amazing organisation. The presentation below was in an old tram shed. The headphones allowed for a couple of talks to happen in the same space and you could switch between them.

Krakow

I did not get to SF4 in Thailand. It was just too far to go for me, but it did open it up to more people in Asia. There had been people from all over the world at the others and it was great to meet so many of them. Since then we have had two virtual Hivefests that I attending in AltspaceVR. It is not the same experience, but just being able to walk up to people and chat is great. We should do more informal events using the various online tools. I have been on some Zoom chats with a few people.

Not too long ago Roeland announced the first in-person Hivefest. He is from the Netherlands, so it will be easier for him to do it there. People will ask why it cannot be in the USA or elsewhere. It will come down to cost and who can organise it. Anyone can organise their own Hive event, but something on the scale of these is a major task.

Once the 'official' hotels were announced I booked a room. Previously I had left before the final evening meal, but this time I will stay for the whole thing, so that will mean arriving on the Thursday and leaving on the Monday. I will be staying at the Volkshotel. It is not a cheap city, but I went for a fairly basic room. I just need a bed and a shower really. You can stay wherever you like, but that may involve extra travel. Some people may even camp.

I needed to power down to pay for my Hivefest ticket. There are a range of prices and you are asked to pay one appropriate to your account size. The bigger accounts can subsidise the minnows. You can see who has paid in the Hivefest wallet and so far it is not many. I expect some will be powering down or have to raise the funds from other sources.

This week I arranged my travel. I will be taking the Eurostar from London. My journey involves a change at Brussels, but to go direct would mean a very early start. As it is I need to be at the station around 7am to get checked in. I have not used the Eurostar before, so this is an adventure for me. I would rather not fly even if it is a little more expensive, but this will be fairly convenient as I can get a train into London and the station in Amsterdam is not far from the hotel.

With those three things I have sorted most of it. I am thinking of bringing a guitar along as there were some jam sessions at previous events. For those I took a ukulele as that was easier when flying.

I really hope that COVID does not cause too many issues with Hivefest. The last thing we need is more travel restrictions. I did seem to catch a cold or something at previous ones, but then you are talking to so many people. You may lose your voice anyway. I would recommend taking it easy with the free drink if you want to last the weekend.

I did some running in Krakow and I see there is a parkrun in Amsterdam. I would like to try that, so if others can be up in time on the Saturday we can go. It is a little way out of the centre, but we can get a taxi if necessary.

I really hope to see lots of you there. Even if you are a small account you will be made welcome. We can all bring something to Hive.

Hive five!

Sort:

especially as so many people seemed to know me.

I have a feeling that wouldn't be the case for me if I were to attend. So many more people on the platform now than there was back then! I am likely not attending though. September is a pretty bad month for me as it is the first couple weeks of school and I need to be on hand for the staff and students. I hope I get the chance to attend one of the festivals some day though. How many hours are you looking at in terms of travel time?

I think a fair few people would know who you are as you are so active. I got there by commenting a lot.

I may need to leave home around 6am to be in Amsterdam about 3pm (an hour ahead of UK), so maybe 8 hours. Not too bad really. There will be some waiting around for checking in. Would not be much quicker if I flew as you still have to wait around and then connect at each end.

No, 8 hours isn't as bad as I would have thought. Does the train run under the water then? I don't know all the ins and outs of getting from England over to the rest of Europe.

The train goes through the Channel Tunnel. I've been through it once before with a car on a train, but this is a normal passenger train that links up with the rest of Europe.

Gotcha. I ended up Googling it and I understand now. That seems like a long time to be in a tunnel!

Great stuff Steve, might just see you there!

Cool. Will be great to meet up again

Impossible for me, but I will be there in spirit with you and I know that you are going to enjoy it.

I'd love to meet you some day. Never say never ;)

I am sure that we are destined to meet and that the time and the place will appear somewhere in the future my friend. I would also love to meet you, as we have been friends for a long time.

Baring finding one of my old hippie friends to tell me about a squat I could stay in, I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to swerve it this time 😕

To say money is tight for me atm is an understatment... but well, such is life I suppose.

Enjoy the hive madness Steevc 🙂

You should defo take a guitar! Shake your didn't have one of those new fangled foldy ones. I am still unsure as to how good they can be but they have been getting some positive review vibes which hopefully isn't all fake!

I'm not buying another guitar just for this trip. I assume there will be space on the train to stash it.

Just one more eensy weensy guitar. You can never have enough 😜 !BEER

Well I'm wondering if we could be able to watch hive fest live on YouTube or somewhere especially for those who can't afford ticket or travel. Sorry for asking it's first time hearing about this fest and curious to know if i can experience live hive fest at home.

Previous events have been streamed so you should be able to watch.

Thanks, ill surely watch it!

I wish I was there.

hope you will enjoy Amsterdam , plenty of things to visit if you want to escape from the event .
I've lived there for +/- 30 years , not sure if i will go myself although it's only 90 minutes drive from where i live, not sure if i'm ready to face that ammount of people yet.

I have been there before, but not even for a full day. I hope to see some of the city. You should go if you can even if you just go for a day. It will be fun.

We're about to take off captain.., ready yourself!

It was a wild trip. Good thing I wasn't the one driving everything.

Every time there is a 'fest' there are less people than the last. Looking at the wallet of @hivefest I see no reason why the trend will bend. It won't be a SteemCamp but avoiding people may be problematic.

I suspect a lot of people will get booked in the next few weeks. Numbers may have been down for Thailand as that was not so easy for some to get to. We shall see, but I would hope for a good number to be there. I think I'll find enough to talk to for it to be fun.

I'm not so worried about awkward people. They can often be less threatening when not behind a keyboard.

With Thailand we had a lot more of the Asian community attend. Since then, quite a few of them have stayed on STEEM, and we have the halving effect. I guess there will be few from over that side of the world in Amsterdam.

Thanks for sharing. Hopefully l will get to attend one in the future, it sounds exciting. Especially getting the international parkrun in too !LOL

I check that for any place I travel to these days, but it does not always work out.

Why did two Ralph Lauren employees get into a fight?
They were Polo opposites.

....if Im honest my bank account will be happy that Im not splashing out!
I hope you have a great time and I look forward to seeing some videos!
p.s. I did my first ever live gig last friday in great yarmouth and it went very well! Im feeling a bit more confident now so I hope to do some more in the future. Just have to find good spots with pianos in them!

You will be missed. We need another East of England meetup, possibly with musical instruments involved.

There will be lots of coverage of Hivefest from those attending as well as the live feeds of presentations.

The gig sounds fun. Any video of that?

!BEER

yes we could have a meetup in Diss someday and record something together at my studio! Perhaps we should put that to the uk hivians? That would be fun!
I may well put some video up of the gig. My sister took some.... Truth be told I havnt dared look at it yet. I dont want it to spoil my perfect memory! lol

I'd love to do that. We will have to sort out a date.

I only ever made it to lisbon.... apart from some VR appearances over the last couple of years! When I saw it was in holland I thought Id be attending for sure, but things just didnt turn out right with the dates. Sad : (
