Well Hello There Fellow Travelers And Hivers!
It's been quite a busy vacation for me! I think it's safe to say that I've done more on this vacation than any other vacation I had! By the time I get home it would have felt like I was away for more than a year!
But that's exactly what we want, isn't it?
Especially so today! This day was packed tighter than we thought! It was to be a one way trip to the light house and we would have been on our way home. Oh pardon me, yes we are going to try the light house once more, seeing that the first visit didn't pan out like we planned (What do you know, nothing ever pan out the way it's planned) but this time around we were successfull!!!
For the adventures of today I would have to split into two separate posts otherwise it would be one of those, a bridge too far moments! I know the more content you add in a post the better! But somewhere one has to be able to draw the line! Luckily I have enough to make both posts worth it!
The day started with the adventure at the light house, usually we try and wrap up the most important stuff first etc. going to the beach would be the last thing we do when we know the rest of the day is open.
So it was to be the light house and then joining the Betty's parents at Santos Beach, well we wrapped up the light house trip pretty good! Take a look!
As you can see me sipping on a iced coffee almost above the clouds!
The light house has a few bar seats outside overlooking the ocean! I failed to notice how relaxing it all was on the spot, but thinking back I've never really had a proper view where I would be able to relax and enjoy something to drink.
I mean never!
Whilist enjoying the iced coffee I had from as high up as we were you could literally see everything. It felt energizing beyond measure! We watched as the surfers each grabbed a wave one by one surfing inland riding the waves like one would a motorcycle on a long road. We watched as what I would say was more than 40 dolphins swimming just off the point, I was shocked to even have noticed it, every time a fin came through the water it made a little white fleck of light as the sun reflected off them!
Although my first experience wasn't a satisfying one I would most definitely go back for another drink before we depart homewards.
A view from the seats we had!
After chucking the drinks we had one thing on our minds and that was climbing out the light house tower, after all we did get our drinks free if we did the little light house tour! So a little score is in order. At first I thought what difference would it make we're already so high up going a few more feet wont change that much!
I was wrong, oh so wrong!
The tower we meant to climb a few days prior! Well we're here now aren't we!
Most of the climb was climbing stairs and that's about that! Well for me it was a heart pounding climb! Every step I took moved and the wooden staircases and it being as old as it was made a creaking sound with every step!
It was fun although I did think I was going to die at one point, or two or more!
But after a few I made it up top! And it was well worth it!
The Betty made her way up and down as if she's not the slightest bit afraid of heights, the way she moved around all comfortable outside made even me panic! One missed step and you are going down missy!
On the way up the light house it had a few windows one could peek through, it felt, well it felt like I was in a light house, strangely enough!
I didn't know if I was allowed to but I opened the window for a better picture! The Betty said I must not do it, yet the moment I opened it she pulled out her phone to get a picture! Sometimes it pays off to just do something and stop being afraid, besides I did everyone a favour by letting in some fresh air!
Peeking through windows!
Unsure I was even allowed to open them but here we are.
Reaching The Top
When I say it was worth it, believe me. Before we started our climb off a person came down and told us it was worth it, and yet somehow I didn't want to believe him. Who could blame me, the light house is only that big and I had no idea that climbing those few meters actually made a huge difference on the perspective that one saw the ocean below!
It felt absolutely breathtaking! I'm serious though I almost passed out because of the heights! I made it though, even if it felt like the wind was about to blow me away!
I took the photos in sequence from one side till the next.
I think what added to the beauty a lot was the fact that we had clear skies and that made visibility so much more! I wander how it would feel going out on a misty day! Imagine having to guide a ship on a misty day, can be one tricky thing to do! And even more so having to guide a ship through a storm!
The wind was stronger when we reached the top of the light house although it was a very windless day, as one can see in the smoothness of the ocean! No where can a wave be seen! If I was a fisherman or sailor I'd say it was the perfect weather for going out on the ocean!
The point that reaches out on the right hand side of the photo that's where we ended with the Cape St.Blaize trail we didn't to the whole of the trail, it's a bit too long and you'd have to end up walking back to where you parked the car, so starting the 10km walk would have you ending up with a 20km walk if you had to go back!
I'd say we reached the 2km mark maybe just under 3 when we turned back last time! I think this year we will try and cover a bit more ground so that we can get around the point pushing into the ocean.
The Betty posing for photos all relaxed as if she isn't standing a few meters up in the air with a vague chance of falling off.
I wish I was able to be as relaxed, I think it would have been a little bit more joyous for me!
The Actual Light
I have never really given much thought to how exactly a light house light would look, if I had to guess I would have said it's just one big flashlight. This seems more than a flashlight though. A very interesting design to say the least!
While up there staring at the light a thought came to mind, if this light was visible 45km from the shoreline, how bright is this light! What if the light came on while standing up top? Would I go blind from the sudden beam of light or would I have time to react and turn away before being blinded?
Just a thought.
The light house light.
There was a few more picture worthy moments! Such as this old anker that's busy rusting away, now it must have been one colossal struggle to get it all the way up the hill into this spot. It must have been intentionally done for cosmetic beauty around the light house, there was one a little bit further down as well.
I have to say it added nicely to the authenticity of the light house.
Old rusty anker
Old compass rusting away at the base of the light house, they since then converted it to a trash bin which is a really great way of recycling ey?
At the base of the tower itself where one started climbing the steps they had these old somewhat antique looking maps placed in frames. Both a map of Mossel Bay and Cape Agulhas Port Elizabeth
The map of Port Elizabeth.
The map of Mossel Bay where this light house is located.
After we enjoyed the wholesome adventures at the light-house, I'm so glad that it was a success this time around but after all of that we decided to visit the old grave yard, some of these graves are more than a hundred years old!
Well we decided to eat some strawberries on the go while we stroll about, I'm sure this isn't seen as disrespectful or will the dead come haunting me. 😂
Yeah we were still eating on those strawberries and we still had so much left at that point.
Even though it's a graveyard it didn't really have a eerie feeling to it, it actually felt like some place I would like to be buried! Which will never happen I think it's some sort of museum now.
Although the adventures for this day is not yet done, we still have so much planned that I have to write a separate post about just that, I will also only be sharing those events after I finished this series and then those will count upon the end of the series where I will refer back to most of the posts I shared mentioning the day the events happened.
Until next time folks! Stay good and stay blessed!
